Correct me if I'm wrong, docs, but I've heard/read that the overuse of anti-bacterial everything is actually weakening the immune systems of the general populace.

I read an article that claims that. It also said soap and water and mechanical means of wiping bugs off (clean towel, paper towel) is more effective that anti-bacterial stuff. According to the article, antibiotics don't touch viruses while soap, water, and a clean towel take care of bacterial and viruses. Sounds like our moms were right.

My problem is in exiting restrooms - I see so many guys that don't wash their hands after - well, you know. I wash and hope for paper towels that I can use to open the doors. No paper towels, I try to grab the door handle with a pinkie, and to use that pinkie to hook onto the handle using a section I don't think people would normally use.

I saw a sign on the inside of a restroom door that gave me pause, it said "Women". I gave a panicked look over my shoulder to make sure I had just come from a standing urinal. Jokers.

Restroom doors swing in because?????

Couple of reasons... ADA has 18" on the pull side of a door and most are in apposing alcoves for women/mens rooms.

Bigger reason is the Mechanical Code... it requires bathrooms be kept at a ventilation rate and allows "make-up" air for the space to be taken from hallways etc. Although typically these days hvac contractors will put a supply duct in the room instead.... used to be under older codes when using make up air from the hallway you had to put in those old grills at the bottom of the door for air flow otherwise if you pushed the door in too quickly you could hear the ceiling tiles rattle from the change of air pressure of you opening the door.

Now ends the random ramblings of a construction code geek.... feel free to return to previous programming

How do you know that the guy who installed the restroom door handle was a proper handwasher. And the person that loaded the paper towels into the dispenser? You guys should really wear a germ warfare suit when using public restrooms

Macaroni Grill:
Quote:
Every Mac Grill has "men" written in Italian on the inside of the women's bathroom door and vise versa. Another tradition- something about the construction workers of the first Macaroni Grill getting drunk and messing up the signs and never switching them back, so if you speak Italian don't freak out and think you're in the wrong bathroom.... It's always funny to watch people come out and go into the other bathroom though

Bravo! I work at science museum, almost everything I work on has been touched by hundreds if not thousands of germ infested little hands... bathroom door handles FEAR ME!
Before this job I worked construction... I kid you not, paper towels and duct tape for bandages.
And yet... I somehow survive...

When the global pandemic hits you germaphobes know you will be first to go... right?

Umm. In the bad ol' days when sewage just went straight into the sea there was a great spot in a big swell close by. We were actually paddling amongst the turds. We called them goldfish. The first couple of times you surfed there you threw up afterwards. And new guys always threw up. I've barely been ill in the 30 years since then and I joke that it has made me immune to just about everything going.

Yes, but you knew it was not a good place to be, other than the phenomenally good waves.

I am the resident fluffer but yes, I do a bit of pediatrics on the side.

At work I am fairly careful washing my hands after every contact with acute illness in children as the pathogens mostly are viral airway microorganisms that generally are very contagious. Most of us will of course still get contaminated on a Daily basis but paradoxically we are very rarely sick. Arguably our immune defense system develop a high level of tolerance.

The rest room germs on the other hand does not bother me at all besides generally being disgusting Environments. The reason for that is that although most of the Surfaces probably are packed with microorganisms, they are mostly of a fecal origin, like coli bacteria and the like. They are much less pathogenic in that setting and any contamination will most likely not lead to illness.

Mind you, I wouldn´t lick the toilet seat though..

And Sweden is known as being a very clean country. Too cold for a lot of germs. Often the Swedish get ill while travelling in places like the Greek Islands (almost zero hygiene standards) because they arn't used to it. Still, I don't recommend surfing where I used to surf
