I've been wearing the 1871 around the shop...in a proper holster as my sidearm. they all think I'm "unique".

All this talk about pistols vs revolvers. I think I'm going to deadlock the back door so they can't run for it and use a chainsaw as a self defense weapon.

The only pistol I've ever shot is the Browning High Power in 9mm. Let me tell you that felt like a fine pistol.

Ha, I did get rather a surprise. I was used to firing .38 Special through a big S&W model 28 which felt like a pop gun, so this was different. I certainly wouldn't want to fire .357 in a small J frame.

My every day "pocket" revolver, an old Charter Arms Bulldog Pug. Five shots of .44 Special, featuring the classic 250 grain Keith bullet (RCBS mold # .44-250K) at about 840 fps courtesy of a healthy dose of Unique. Yes, this might involve a little bit of recoil...

The term "pistol" is generic for any firearm that is hand held. Automatic, revolver etc are generic terms for a type of hand held firearm.

Just as you would say a rifle is a generic term for a firearm that has a rifled barrel and is generally held at the shoulder.

I have a Smith 686+ and Colt mk3 Trooper, both in 6". The Smith is the funnest thing that I own, just awesome to shoot. If something goes bump in the night I will grab the Smith because there's nothing to go wrong. Plus it looks scary as hell.

Only if you are British. Here in 'merica, "pistol" and "revolver" are two distinctly separate classes of handgun, at least for those who care about accuracy in their terminology.

"Carbine" and "rifle" describe distinctly different longarms. Unfortunately, however, the distinction between these two terms has become even more blurred than that between "pistol" and "revolver", at least for the less knowledgeable in such matters.

LOVE that movie. Just beautiful.

I enjoy my revolver at the range but would never want anything other than a semi auto if I actually had to use the gun for its intended purpose. I despise DA triggers.

David,

Those are two UUUUUGGGGGGLLLLLLLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE pieces of scrap metal!!!!! I'll take a quarter to take them off your hands!!!!!! ;-)

Revolvers. Simple, they work, if you need more than three rounds you are in serious trouble or in a combat zone, both really.

I trust revolvers for personal protection. I have 30 round magazine spoons to handle the packs of stray dogs and packs of coyotes that trouble the stock. When you are up close and personal a revolver is simple and effective. Even my 1911 could have a FTF/FTE eventually. A basic revolver will just work! When you need one, just working is the most important thing there is!!!

Simplicity/Reliability is the reason I keep this handy and the Autos in the safe for home defense. A solid 357 is just hard to argue with...

It is my understanding that a "pistol" is a semi-automatic type using a removeable clip or magazine and a "revolver" is one with a rotating cylinder that holds the ammunition. So, if I say pistol, I am talking about something like a Glock but if I say revolver, I am referring to something like a Colt Detective Special or a S&W Chiefs Special. The term "handgun" would cover both types.

Glocks should go bang every time. Yours has an issue. Glock does factory refurbs free of charge and they cover return shipping. Mail yours back and have them fix it. It's not my favorite gun in the safe, but "Glock" is synonymous with "super reliable."

The only time I've ever had feed (or any issues) issues with my G27 was when ran the extended mag, and actually tightened the set screw on the extended grip- Pearce extended grip. Left it untightened and it was perfect.

I shot way better with my 2.5" 586 pimp gun, than my Beretta 92.

A real story: When I sold my Jeep a year ago, the guy that bought it didn't have but $10K in cash for the transaction - he drove from Atlanta to B'ham to get the Jeep... somehow he thought he was going to get it for $10K period; to make the story short, he popped up a S&W and put it on the table, he scared the **** out of me... and said "this is as far as I can go, $10K and I'll give you my gun..." and the rest is history. Since that day I own this:

And I know NOTHING about guns, haven't even fired up yet...

Buy some ear protection and a couple boxes of .38 special (I know it says .357 magnum, but do a little research, every .357 magnum revolver is designed to handle .38 special safely) and start at 7 yards. If you know someone who shoots, see if they'll take you to a range with them. Great gun (and nice holster), but it was built to be shot not pose for pictures. Once you're comfortable with the .38's shoot some magnums. If it isn't fun, and you don't want to keep it, watch some of the auction sites and see what they are selling for (not what people are asking), and take it to a gun shop where they'll treat you fair. But chances are you'll like it even more after doing some shooting.
