Both feet in now my friend! I am enjoying this thread, keep up the good work ! So , did it blow a head gasket? You mentioned that in my thread . Im curious to see the heads when you tear them down, Ive never had one apart. I am guessing it is the same as an s2, or 968 head, with the center chains, and tensioners, and all that nonsense . Should be pretty straightforward once it is out and on the stand

It looks that way Fred. #6 had good leakdown but a lot of gurgling. #5 had 90% leakdown. Now all I need is a ton of snow. 3.2 is getting a total detail down to tumbling/polishing the intakes. Will post that on Technical.

It comes apart easily enough. Will probably wait for the weekend to get the heads off. Probably best done fresh. tomorrow I'll do the exhaust.

Cams do not look good.

On the bright side (pun intended) you can clean and re-plate a LOT more fasteners now.

I remain amazed at how simple this motor is, but then I'm used to air cooled I guess. Everything comes apart easily. Very well engineered. Didn't need the bridges or a Hazet 8mm triple square, my trusty old, no idea where I got it, triple square set made of structural cheddar worked perfectly with a 3/8 gun to just loosen the bearing cap bolts.

Tomorrow morning we get to see what's under the bad head side.

Garage
I love the chain connecting the cams - right in the middle. Never seen that before - maybe in a motocycle?

I definitely envy you that you have time to dink with this much hardware all at once!

Have fun!

I'm sure you will do a fine job Shaun...but man I thought I was crazy for restoring an MGB.....
Funny note: On my garage wall, for Porsche I have winning posters for Sebring and LeMans and stuff like that. For the MG I have a large color blow up of the wiring schematic!! I feel your pain brother,,

Great project, Shaun! Thanks for sharing. I always wanted a 928, but not sure. I have the energy of it any more. Keep posting!

That looks like a newer style Reniz head gasket, you are not the first explorer to be in there .

Taking off the head, the problem became immediately obvious. Victor Reinz's experiment with head gaskets made out of facial/make-up removal cotton pads didn't work out so well.

It does look surprisingly simple. Also looks like a lot of coolant flows around those cylinders.

So, Shaun, what course of action do you take? Factory Gaskets? Copper? (you'd have to machine grooves for orings in the head or the block) A quick google search shows that there aren't a whole lot of options....and everything is taxed to 928 specs....

I'm like sand-man thinking that those water jackets seem really large! Like moats!

Given #6, I am honestly not sure. I have a spare 87 motor, unknown quantity, car was totaled.

I was not expecting #6 piston to be damaged.

Shaun, the piston looks salvageable, but how is the cylinder?

What's going on there - looks like some FOD damage. Thoughts?

Walls are discolored compared to others but smooth with no scratches or scoring at all.
