Unfortunately no Fred. I'm still excited to drive the car by the end of December.
And I'm really happy otherwise. I may have to get a Fiat.

I'm enjoying following this thread. I am amazed at the effort you put into these projects. Hauling those engines up two flights of stairs !!
If the 928 was my car and my goal was to have fun driving it I would polish the high spots and sharp edges off of the piston and head to eliminate hot spots that might cause detonation, maybe do a valve job, and put it back together. But I'm not understanding all I'm seeing in the pictures. What's with the head gaskets? Is there something about the piston/head damage that is connected to the head gaskets? Good luck!

Hey Patrick, yes, the piston and head damage will cause a new head gasket to fail again. Thing is I'm a terrible perfectionist so I have to put it back together with the best possible parts. I've got time to think about it and make a plan. For now it's all tucked away.

Great project. (My wife used to complain that I'd probably spend more time refining parts of the car you couldn't see than on the parts you could. )

One more thing Fred, having this motor grenade like this means I get to powder coat and plate and polish everything which has provided the impetus to build a new powder coating booth.
So it's a good thing.

Got some work done on the motor tonight. A week ago my friend Chris grabbed the flywheel and shook it and sure enough, the crank went kerchunk so for the last few days I've had dreams of a cracked block from thrust bearing failure. Given the relative minimal machining of the bearing down to copper, I think I'll be OK. I'll pull the crank out tomorrow or over the weekend and get it to a machine shop next week.
Looks like someone was welding inside the motor. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I didn't realize the Porsche V8 connecting rods were siamesed two to a throw.
Interesting build/overhaul.

Maybe get that rod checked. Seems like you could get that head reconditioned, if you had a mind to.

and it's done. Now it's pretty much experts checking tolerances and confirming everything is OK. Daniel, I could have Bob at Anchor Atlantic do the heads. I still need cams and should probably get new/better cam gears. As Fred said, I'm all in on this now. Given that I need cams, I wonder if I can add go-fast ones. Now is certainly the time.

Wow...and to think you if you can overhaul this engine you probably could have been a brain surgeon..

Soldiering on, I have to place an order with 928 Intl soon since December is 1/2 price. Cams are bad so naturally some lifters will be too. Visual inspection if enough to toss the obvious ones but a piece of ground stock and a flashlight determines which ones are keepers. Once I know what I have good tomorrow, I'll send those to Craig Garrett (cgarr) and ones from 928 Intl to be surfaced. Building crates for the heads tomorrow to send those to Bob at Anchor Atlantic to go through.
Slowly but surely. 2 good, 4 bad here, one keeper at the very end. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Now in 993 land ...

I am starting to think "quirky" looking at that crank, the cams connected by a chain in the middle. Who designed this engine? The Brits?
![]() I really think you named this thread right. I'd be getting that LS crate engine by now! ![]() G |

This is way too much fun George!
Lifter art. Not quite Serra, but if I can put an exhibition together, I could possible fund a stroker build. Have 18 good lifters so I need a few more. ![]()

Yikes ! Seems to me that One of those guys over on Rennlist used to have the Holbert speed record car, and that it had the stock cam profile, but altered cam timing. Mark Kibort, I think.
My 85 was owned by a friend of Al Holbert, and was one of the first 32 valve cars in the country. They altered the cam timing on mine as well, but I can't tell you what it is. Kibort will know, if he is still around. From what I understand, you can pick up 25 ponies on an 85/early86 just by replacing the exhaust with a free flow unit. Carl at 928 motorsports used to make one. You might have to get one custom bent today. Seems like the later heads are also the ones to have, bigger valves. GT spec would be pretty nice, if you can pull that off. I haven't thought about any of this for years. S4 heads, GT cams and a chip would really get you somewhere. You might want to look into cross drilling the crankshaft. Otherwise, stick to the current redline. A chip may raise the redline, but without altering the crank, you don't want to go there. Nice project. |
