Well, it's been recommended by Click and Clack, (The Tappet Brothers).
Seems like a no-brainer.

No, he needs to change the belts ASAP. Needs to set the belt tension with the special tool, too...
Belts might live 10 years, at the outside. Neglected for a while, then sat for years... he's treading dangerous ground. Hey Shaun, if you need a set of factory service manuals, I have a new set I'd sell. Never been used... See the 928 classifieds... JR |

Found this on Rennlist.
"I used to have noisey lifters on my 87 s4. It progressivly got worse, particualrly if the car sat for a few weeks. I assumed the little springs inside my hydraulic lifters were shot (had this happen on a volvo), so I bought 32 used lifters, (not cheap) and just before taking the cams out a time saving miracle occured. Marc anderson mentioned something to me in a routine phone call. "S4s with the short cams have a rubber plug that blocks two oil circulation holes that are no longer needed. The plugs go bad and literally fall out." I checked noisy head and what do you know, one had fallen out and the other was badly warped with age. His solution is small metal rods that block the passages with something that wont age or warp. I have not had lifter noise since. Thats in 4 years, 27,000 miles of use! -Sam 87 s4 5 spd 78 euro 5 spd "

928s rock. Loved mine, but frankly it was almost too nice to drive. I'd have another.
![]() JR knows of what he speaks. I can say without hesitation that the 928 was easier to drive than a 911 and more confidence inspiring. Absolutely unflappable and makes you feel invincible as a driver. Heavy compared to a 911 of the same era, but frankly small and light by today's standards. Good luck with it Shaun. I still have the factory belt tension gauge (which costs a small fortune). I'd lend it to you, but sadly it was a Hurricane Sandy flood victim so I'm not sure I'd trust it as this point.

Please post a few more pics of your car Jacob. I am thankful that this car is nice, but not even close to too nice to drive. It will be a great daily driver.

Got to play with a car a little today. #3 fuel injector is stuck open. Plug is wet, left side tailpipe is wet and sooty. All other plugs looked great. Surprised about #3 because it was running very smoothly, but that plug was not firing.
Tried to order tires today. Oddly enough it was easy to get the unobtainium RE11 245/45/16s. 225/50's are gone, as in nationwide gone. I found one at a local Firestone, getting it on Sunday. I will more likely than not take the 225s off the front of the 80 (now a tub on a dolly) and use those. But if anyone has a pair, let me know. Will order a belt kit tomorrow, Worldpac is open on Monday I think.

All the photos I took of my 928 while under my stewardship:
https://asbury.smugmug.com/By-Land/Porsche-928 This car had about 18k miles when I bought it. Sold 1 year later with about 22k on the clock. When you do the belt service you might want to refurbish the tensioner mechanism. If you haven't discovered it already, the 928 forum on Rennlist is quite active and there are lots of DIY guys who are ready to help you get this car sorted out. They also have a bunch of clever fixes like there is a Ford or GM engine mount that fits which is recommended instead of the OE Porsche ones (which are known to fail).

Wow! Your car and mine are two completely different cars. Just gorgeous!.
I joined Rennlist recently, yes, thanks. I'll post my intro and the car tomorrow. Not much more I can do with it until I do the belts. I'll also talk with the shop who serviced the car, they have all records, but even if the belts were done in 2007 and car was parked in 08, I'd want to do them just from time and sitting.

Shaun,
I know nothing about the factory belt tension gauge, but I have this one that I used on my Jeep XJ...it's new and works perfectly for me...if you can use it I'll loan it to you. PM if so. .

I have an actual factory 9201 I'll lend if need be. The Kricket tool is ok too (I have both and have used both) but I find it clunky and difficult to get accurate / consistent readings on. Your choice. You can even "guess tension" by twisting a quarter turn - a guy I used to work on 944s with taught me that and it always worked well even on hopped up / race prepped cars.
I would do the belts before you start it again. Russian roulette. |

Thanks, I have a lot of people offering their tool sets so I think I'm covered. Great community!

The 225-50-16 RE 11 gone, all gone? Did they quit making them when they got the RE 71 going?

Hey Toby. Right now, they are all gone. Tire rack is supposed to get more at the end of October so I think they are going back into production. I may buy an extra pair of 245s if I can get 2015 date code. Will be interesting to see the dates on the ones coming

Thanks Fred! Unfortunately I'm out and about most of the weekend and I can't start it anymore anyway. Hoping to do the belts on Tuesday/Wednesday this week. Tackling the brakes and interior tomorrow and should probably wash it too.
Have a great Labor Day weekend!

Let see now, Sniper and JE928 both were 928 owners, both are mental cases and are now gone... So the question becomes does the 928 drive you nutz or are the nutz drawn to the 928?
So with that said, I guess we are going to find this out??? So one guesses that in the end this 928 adventure is another one of Shauny's SOCIAL EXPERIMENTS.

While this looks complicated, it is typical VW/Audi/Bosch electrical setup. Albeit with more of the stuff than typical Passat or Golf. Relays are often interchangeable and once you understand the schematics, it is rather logical and straight-forward (different buss-rails going from page to page etc).
If you are able to read electric schematics and understand the logic behind, it is easy sailing. If you don't, then it's "OMG electrical nightmare" -time.

A good day today, not a terribly hard job so far. Driver side cam rotated after taking the belt off, have good white marks so not concerned when it all goes back together.
Wish I had the time to tear much more of it down just for cleaning and replating. Getting fuel rails out tomorrow to be plated in preparation for putting in new injectors. ![]() A jungle of belts and adjusters. Not Porsche's best work. ![]() 45 degrees as a safe place where valves can't hit pistons. ![]() These white marks are going to come in handy. ![]() ![]() Flywheel locked down. ![]() Done for the day. You can see the driver side sprocket is off.

That engine's totally different than the 911. What's that green stuff leaking out?
