2015 4 Runner
Any experience with these? I ordered four of theses in basic SR5 trim on Friday for the managers of my stores. I absolutely need my employees to be able to get to their stores in any weather condition.
So far I have delivered two of them and the feedback is good, but I have until Tuesday to return them. Did I make a mistake on an impulse buy? (These are replacing 2012 Ford Transits which have been fantastic other than in the snow.) We have a lot of business owners here so I tough I would illicit some opinions. My managers, while having checkered pasts, are very responsible and take excellent care of the cars, and I allow them for personal use. ![]()

I have a 2014 in the Platinum model. Live in Kansas City and love this thing. I "usually" change out my DD every year or so, but have NO plans to do so with this. Rides great and handles the weather beautifully. Put about 40k a year on mileage, NO issues to date. Good choice and I'd think your employees would be thrilled.

Excellent, part of their performance plans state they get the cars. So I wanted something a bit more exciting than a mini van this time,

You guys hiring? I need to work for you if I get one like it.
I have one a limited. The only complain is the way it shifts into 5th gear in too much of a hurry. it shifts into 5th going 40. That's the only PITA. Other then that, its a tank. I bought it for ski trips and DD along with my other vehicles. They are good vehicles and are super reliable. There is not one thing wrong with it in 50k. I have the 2011 |

Don't people have to put up collateral for your type of lending?

Yes, and mobility to collect is key.

Now in 993 land ...

I think these are good trucks. Definitely capable in bad weather. I would not buy one for personal use due to poor mileage / sluggish performance in eco mode / crammed and pedestrian (plasticy) interiors. But for your use, they will be awesome and will make people feel good in terms of prestige - they don't look like your average work vehicle, rather than a decent family SUV.

If you are asking whether they are good vehicles, they are the best thing of their type on earth. At one time, we had owned every generation of 4Runner from 1st generation to mid-2000s. My dad used them for winter cars in Minnesota and going to lake country in summer, they are flawless. Toyota did not get their reputation for nothing.

My realtor had one when we toured the rural acreage on my parcel. Very very capable. Forest road flooded out with a flash flood, and the Toyota did not miss a beat. Softer suspension then I'm used to from my off road rig, but I seriously considered one after that experience...

It's a Toyota, what more is there to say? The front end looks like a storm trooper helmet on those.

Email your delinquent debtors a photo of the 4Runner. You'll have the money immediately.

I drive a relative's 2003 fairly regularly - handles bad weather well but I would never EVER buy one for myself. What a gas pig! Between 18-20 mpg. Horrid. Like offensively horrid. Maybe they're better now but I dunno. It also has not been maintenance free by a long shot - the auto-leveling suspension is an unnecessary, overpriced, quirky POS ($2k last year), the front brake calipers seized last winter (another $2k repair), there is rust forming on the back tailgate and it handles like a Civil War era ironclad battleship. That said, it'll haul things and get through bad weather all right but whooboy will you pay for it. Granted there's a 12-year difference between the 2003 I use and the 2015 you're discussing but still - it hasn't changed that much has it?
I'll drive my Mercedes unless there's snow / ice / crap on the ground. It's just a way better car. The 4-runner is easier to carry surfboards though (although the Medcedes does that too without it being a big deal). YMMV. |

I'm now on my 3rd 4Runner. Latest is a 2010. Best all around SUV you are going to find. I usually by a used one with around 70K miles on it and sell at 140K miles. Never, ever had to do anything other than change out consumables. You can expect around 16mpg around town and close to 20 mpg on the highway. But who buys one of these for gas mileage? Great in all weather situations. Very comfortable, but extremely rugged.

18-20 mpg is "horrid" in a true 4wd SUV? On what planet? That's pretty good fuel mileage for a truck frame, large SUV. It's not a Prius, for chrissakes.
![]() I'd be doing cartwheels if my Chevy Silverado got that mileage. It's more like 12 mpg in town and 16 on the highway.

Diesel. Toyota should bring over the diesels.

For sure. It would be awesome. But the guy complaining about fuel mileage above is really confused; several popular mid-sized SUVs from recent years are 10mpg vehicles. V-8 Dodge Durangos and Jeep Grand Cherokees got 10 mpg going downhill. I'm not talking about towing, I'm talking about empty and being driven by an 80 lb. dwarf.
18-20 mpg from a powerful, heavy SUV like the modern 4Runner would be best-in-class economy for sure. ![]()

My next daily driver is most likely going to be a 4Runner Trail Edition Premium. The interior to me does not seem plasticy and cheap. But I'm daily driving a '98 M3 right now, so anything new is a step up. I should be able to live with 18-20 mpg, my commute is only 5 miles. We've had a lot of snow the past few years so it'll come in handy there. What I really look forward to is taking it off road and having some fun.

I know its a different animal, but they already import the diesel Land Cruiser to Canada. Talk about a rugged vehicle. I get in line for that if they bring it in the US.
