Just raise it. The last person I would want to piss off is my mail carrier. Especially if you live on a rural route.

They should be going after the county road commission instead of customers.
Maybe go higher up on the USPS food chain and get a waiver/exemption for your area? Having previously loaded thousands of packages into trailers per night myself I can see where he would be a stickler for regulation height. Every extra movement cost in effort, and a slight tripping hazard turns into a big one at the end of a tired night. Your present carrier is a sub and not using standard delivery vehicle for which the system was built around and she could change easily while hundred of mailboxes can not. |

Hmm usps using contractors... I bet it's a rural route. Usps hires rca's that wears civies and uses pov's to deliver mail.
I would just raise it. Usps is getting a flux of new vehicles, and your post office might inherit the llv. Then the height is a big deal. Anyways, regulation is regulation. Not worth a headache imho. Plus it'll give you some freedom on building a new stand for the mail box. (Welded cranks, anchor chain, wagon wheel, ect. ect.)

Yep, it's a rural route. And, yes..I do think this is on the county road dept. It's they who did wrong, so it's they who should correct their mistake.
Ahhh, but we live in the real world, don't we? I'll admit to not holding my breath. (edit) Remember, this isn't just about me...10 of my neighbors are also in the same hassle for the same reason.

Just a curious question for pwd72s--how far out of spec is your mail box?
From what I've read, the usps spec is 41-45 inches from the road surface to the inside bottom of the mailbox. I suspect your box is now below 41", but how far?

I replaced my mailbox a few months ago and still have the old one. It's the good old-fashioned black metal with rounded top style. I'll send it to you (though maybe not via USPS) and you can simply bolt/glue/weld it on top of your current too-short one. Presto fixo.

I'm with OP.
They did it to him and 10 others that he knows of. How many hundreds of people has their laziness affected? I would hold them accountable as well. They keep doing it because they are getting away with it. Me thinks a call to your local news programs consumer complaint line is in order. This is just the kind of story they like.

Update news!
Evidently, it was worth my time. At 10:30 A.M., Monday 22 May 2017, I received a call from the county Roadmaster. It seems that commissioner Lindsey had no trouble getting past the Roadmaster's phone answering girl. Funny how things work that way.
Anyway, I am assured that my mailbox will be at the prescribed height sometime this week.

Send that same note to your state and federal representatives. That would be an easy fix for them and an easy way to get votes for life.
They'd just tell one of their flunkies to start making phone calls and threats and it'll get fixed, and you'll be so happy you'll vote for them and tell all your friends how great they are and to vote for them. Lots easier and cheaper than advertising every election. They also know that if they blow it off and reply with a form letter you'll never vote for them ever again, and tell your friends to do the same. EDIT never mind, i see that it was resolved. Cool. |

another update
Cindy had a chat with our carrier. Seems this new district manager, a stickler for "rules", has the carriers upset by insisting they wear seatbelts when moving.
So, imagine..steering wheel on the left. Mailboxes on the right. Frequent stops to open boxes and deliver mail. Fasten seatbelt, drive short distance, stop. Deposit mail. Fasten seatbelt, drive...over and over? Gotta love all these people with rules and a little authority. Beware of strangers who carry a clipboard!
