Only police helicopter shot out of the sky by ground fire! Honest.
On the other hand, police did use the helicopter before that to land in the parking lot of the Crispy Creme several years ago.....not for a crime or rescue but because the pilot and spotter wanted donuts and coffee. Somehow, I'm down with that as I like donuts and coffee. Albuquerque is okay if you live in a gated community, drive an intimidating vehicle (giant truck), stay away from the bad areas (most places), work in a secure building, don't go anywhere on the weekends unless you don't mind trouble, spend your recreational time outside of the city, don't send your kids to public schools, hide in your home. Of course, you can drive to Santa Fe pretty much wide open 24-7. My best score on the 50 mile timed run? 26 minutes, 11 secs. Fun on a bun! So, I'm no angel. I've been in more fistfights over the past decade than I was in all of h.s. and college. I'm a counter-puncher, never an instigator, and a firm believer to treat others the way they treat me. I've had guns pulled on my five times in 30 years. I don't carry any more 'cause I don't want to have to shoot someone. I'll fight you with my hands and will feel bad for a couple of days after beating the crap out of you but I don't want to kill you and feel bad forever. State bird is the middle finger. Land of Enchantment? Nope, land of entitlement or entrapment. Blatantly corrupt politicians and other so-called 'community leaders'. (defn of blatant: bad behavior done openly and unashamedly). Used to be nicer. Sucks now. Never has recovered from the mid-2000s recession. A dying town filling up with people. Want me to pick up today's newspaper and recap the news? I don't read the paper or watch local news but I'll do that for you so you get the idea about what is reported to go on around here. County po-po found a dead girl in an irrigation ditch near my home several years ago (I didn't do it). Her head was almost removed from her body. Never made the news. Not identified, not solved, according to my contacts. No big deal, many unidentified dead here. Many unsolved murders. Want to see my clown paintings? But, it is my home. My practice is the only thing keeping me here. I keep trying but there's really nothing that can be done. |

Wow James - that's depressing as hell. I feel sorry for all the good guys stuck behind there who cannot move.
I also feel like a dodged a bullet last September. I drove my daughter's new Jeep from LA back east - was looking for some adventure and had the time, so I pulled over whenever I got drowsy. First stop was ABQ. And as a tourist, I guess I truly didn't have a clue... (Madonna of the Trail - we have one of these in our city as well) (Think Walter White...)

lol. Good thing I didn't take that job at ABQ Studios. Sounds like I would have been miserable there.

It is not THAT bad if you like the outdoors and don't need an ocean close by. I also don't think it is dangerous for visitors if you have any street smarts.
Being in the outdoors there, it has the same desert type sketchy people that you will encounter anywhere, including CA. At least you can be packing heat there legally. G |

I lived there for several years and liked it. I like to visit and love the food (you really got to know where to go). Love the weather. Wish I could move back.
I did not spend any time downtown except to go out to eat now and then. Lived in the far northeast heights where most folks are pretty well off and typically worked on the Air Force base or the National Lab.

Not a lot to "do" here in general. Come for the weather, vistas and sunsets. Get out doors when ever possible. If you have to choose go North... Taos, Santa Fe, north in general is a better bet (farther from the border, same with AZ). Yes it can be place where you should pay attention to your surroundings. How is that different from any other community.. I hope you and your family enjoy your visit..

I’m here now. Dragging ass out of the forest. It isn’t that bad. Got a decent plate of huevos rancheros. Now grabbing a coupe of artisan pizzas to go.
Seems okay. We we’re near the university and Didnt go into the hood. I think I saw a hotel where a scene of Breaking Bad was filmed.

The University area...is the hood.
If you are following the spin off (Better Call Saul)...there was a large part of the recent episode filed at the "Dog House" that is not far from you. It is an interesting place. https://www.amc.com/shows/better-call-saul/video-extras/season-02/episode-08/clip-dog-house-episode-208-better-call-saul-fifi

DOJ cracked down on police departments across the country for not being nice enough to bad guys (excessive force) between 2009 and 2016...including Albuquerque. The investigation, settlement and reporting on "progress" is never ending. Now they just let bad guys do what they please...sorta like sanctuary cities for gang bangers/criminals. Crime has become pretty bad in Albuquerque. Especially drugs and car theft. I would carry if I moved back (wouldn't mind living in the far NE suburbs again).

I was there in April for a couple days.
I was treated like crap and lied to at the rental car place at the airport, and the howard Johnson's hotel was a POS dump, but other than that there was nothing negative. No one bothered me or caused any trouble. I wasn't out and about at night tho. Maybe it seemed OK because I'm just used to Long Beach Ca? ABQ seemed tame compared to LA county. EDIT: JUNE! Not April. I was there in June. I was in SLC in April. Last edited by sammyg2; 09-13-2018 at 09:46 AM.. |

I would agree to that. It is just worse than it was because some of the crime has moved out onto the nicer suburbs. Crime was bad before the late 90's but seemed to be under control (or at least restricted to"bad" areas) until the last few years. Recent city and county government has not been tough on crime.
