Update for anyone still bothering to read!

Last post was in April. Since then, we got the car running but idle was a little high (1100ish rpm) and I’d still get some oil leaking down from one of the cylinders and from the back by the oil pressure switch.

Not entirely happy so we hit the reset button and dropped the motor again. Everything came apart. Cylinder head studs were loose to our surprise so at least we didn’t have to worry about broken studs.
Sent everything off to the machine shop. Then it’ll be new valves, piston rings, pretty much an entire top end.
While I bought this car with 74k miles on the odometer, true mileage is unknown as I don’t have all service records. However, looking at the inside of the cylinder heads was surprising because you could still see the cross hatching! It makes me think it really is a 74k mileage car. I’ve attached some pics. Will check on the case thru bolt to see if it’s stripped, but will most likely split the case anyway.

While the motor is out, we have decided to gut and repaint in the original Gulf Blue. Previous owner had it repainted and the imperfections were bothering us.

Hoping it’s ready for F1 weekend in Austin. My wife and I are planning on bringing it down for the Hill Country PCA BBQ event at Franklin BBQ Friday night.

Still trying to find the right upholstery (Midnight Blue Leatherette) for the front seats which is a pain. Nobody seems to know what this code/color is. Also got the new glove box in there! Bonus pic of the 911 with my Golf.

Nice progress. You are far along on the engine. I would strongly urge you to split the case and send it out for the specific work these magnesium cases require, especially as the studs were loose. Your cylinders appear to be Nikasil.

I do not disbelieve in anything. I start from the premise that everything is true until proved false. Everything is possible.

If we have come this far, it only makes sense to split the case.

Rebuilt fuel distributor and warm up regulator installed back in March or April.

Armin's 1974 911 2.7L Gulf Blue Build/Restoration

Update if anyone cares to read this thread lol

Classic 9 leather found the matching seat material. Props to them. Both front seat kits should arrive this month.

Dad and I split the case yesterday and we were pretty happy. Looked pretty clean, bearings looked ok. Will still be sending it out to Olli’s in Arizona since we have come this far.

As soon as car is back from paint and body, we will get all the trim back on there and do the seats ourselves. Len’s new fuel lines will be going in them. Some pictures below:

We did refinish a crest in matching Gulf Blue and Orange a few years ago. We'd be happy to refinish one for you as well!

I've tried multiple times to upload this pic however it stills shows up sideways!!

Have you done a spray out and compared it to an original
portion of your car to insure that it’s close?

guess that won't be of any value as the original old paint must be worn out by now.

There’s always a place in the jambs or hood underside that color can be checked against

You are a smart man Nathan but that's also why we only have 1 pint of the paint

Subscribed! Love this thread and the fact that you are restoring with pops. I also have a 74s - Grand Prix White/Blck and am in the process of doing some mild restoration - and dropping a 3.6 swap

Reupholstered the front seats with the Midnight Leatherette. Props to Andrew from Classic 9 for helping me find the right material. Sent him the rear pads for matching.
