Can anyone answer if OE and OE style shift knobs fit on the Numeric Racing level extensions?

AlKidd 11-25-2021 11:53 AM

Looks like there might be a small Black Friday Sale on this at the moment.

I went on their website and can't find this shifter at all.

I know, I'm a moron.

I bought a used Wevo shift knob and it didn't fit because the hole was a tad small. So I took it to a machine shop to have it opened up. I really like my Numeric shifter in my 930 compared to the OE shifter.

I have a friend with a 71 911, that uses the push/pull 911 gearbox, and he is interested. I sent him a link for the shifter. Shouldn't be any issues?

technically speaking the Numeric shifter is exactly what was needed in terms of evolution of a 915 shifter.

it's major asset is it's conclusive simplicity and working without friction (marginal), spring load tuning possible and it is a real short-shifter due to its leverage design.

plus, it is lightweigt indeed.

I installed mine 2 weeks ago. It is indeed incredibly crisp and precise. It has taken me a little time to get used to it and I still am. I am a novice wrencher and I can tell you the coupler adjustment is a little more difficult to dial in than the stock one. I am struggling a little with it. I actually reached out to Numeric to see if I could stop by for a little assistance getting it dialed in but I never heard back from them. I'm sure most of you guys would have no trouble getting the coupler situated and would really enjoy the shifter.

The springs that center the lever can be troublesome with the coupler adjustment.

At best adjustment for my car; when the transmission is in neutral, with all linkage connected, the coupler is twisted a couple of degrees clockwise.

To get there I started with the coupler loose, car in neutral and the shift-lever centered. Using a toothpick, I put a small dab of white paint on the coupler to mark center, this is important for a reference. I twisted the coupler a few degrees counter clockwise and held it there while I tightened the clamp. Then carefully went through the gears.

I did this several times until I got it right. I ended up just a few mm away from the center paint mark but that was enough to make a huge difference.

Since the spring setup centers the shifter in the 3/4 plane, put the transmission in 3rd and then start the coupler alignment process. All that would need to be adjusted in the fore/aft position.

Do just as Scott indicates. This is the method recommended by Rennline for their shifter. Worked first time for me with the Rennline and Numeric, then just a little fore and aft adjustment might be needed.

That seems like a much better method then mine. Thanks!

Thanks Scott, not to appear daft but just to be sure I understand. You are suggesting I leave the coupler connected, put the lever into 3rd and then loosen the coupler for re-adjustment? Just want to be sure I understand. Thanks!

winders 01-05-2022 09:02 AM

Yes. Put the transmission in 3rd gear and loosen the coupler. The shifter will then put itself in the 3rd/4th plane. Now all you need to do is get the fore/aft adjustment correct. Then tighten the coupler. The fore/aft adjustment may take several attempts to get right.

snbush67 01-05-2022 04:46 PM

I just did as Scott describes. So much better. I was close before, but this way is dead on. Very impressive.

Is there any (dare I say) "consensus" on ordering their unit with or without the extender? Also, soft vs stiff spring?

User feedback, opinions and rationale would be greatly appreciated.

Tommy Z 01-06-2022 09:30 AM

I can't speak for anyone else but my impression is I think the extender would desirable. i did not order it mostly because I really love my wooden knob but also I didn't want the shift knob so high up. That having been said, I would jump at the chance to try the shorter extension as the throw without is really short and I think I would like it a little longer.

As of now, without having tried to dial the coupler in per Scott's suggested method (will do that on saturday) I'm very glad I went with the lighter 2mm spring. It takes effort to get in and out of gear and while that's part of what makes it feel so precise, I wouldn't want it any stiffer than it is now.

3literpwr 01-06-2022 11:05 AM

I like the length of the longer extender.
