3.6 conversion parts received from Timmons. Now just have to find the time for the swap. Only things I need to source are an exhaust and engine tins.

If you are talking about the VRAM swap, I really love the sound of my Happy Crab exhaust on my VRAM from Timmons.

Yes, I was speaking about the 81 and the 3.6 upgrade. Nice to know!

I used standard 993 heat exchangers with my set up to save a bit of money and it all works well together. Fits nice and tight up in the space and so far no drone.

I did spend some extra on powdercoating the intake, fan and shroud, as well as the tins. It makes cleanup a snap and the aluminum should stay new looking for some time. If I did it again I would go slightly darker silver or titanium color for the intake and fan, but I like it overall.

This probably means I’ll be investing in a 3D printer to test out parts before having them manufactured. But I thought it was pretty cool for a guy who is not tech savvy.
Hey Ryan, not sure if you saw this on my thread but I ended up using the Demon Speed engine mount plate on my cup engine as a solution to the mounting plate. They also have a version for the 996 turbo: https://demonspeed.com/product/rsr-style-engine-mount-plate-996-gt3-turbo-and-cup/

I drilled new holes to tighten up the spacing and all is well. Ed can also get one custom cut to whatever spacing you want, this was just the quicker/cheaper option.

Wiring and getting the engine to run has been the heaviest aspect of this build weighing on my mind, so it's nice to know that should be significantly easier. Whenever that time comes.
That would be sick! Who did you end up chatting with to do that work? I've been reading that the Emtron ecus are next gen compared to Motec m1 series. If my Bosch stuff won't work for me I'll likely go that route.

That engine bay looks great. How many hours do you think the swap took you if you could estimate it?

I'm planning on doing the work but having my mechanic "supervise" to optimize efficiency. I've found myself running pretty short on time recently and it's only going to get worse this summer, so it's worth the extra cost to get it done quickly.

Interesting, I will absolutely check out the Demon Speed engine mounts. It's fun to learn new technology but if I can get products off the shelf that work, that's obviously easier.

Daniel Elias from Calibrated Performance. He worked with a guy in the Middle East who has a '94 C2 with a 996 Cup Engine and 997 GT3 Transmission. the_red_baron_993 on Instagram. I reached out to him and he said Daniel was great to work with.

The 3.6 swap isn't too dissimilar to taking the OG engine in/out with the exception of rerouting the harness, doing a bit of wiring, and removing the drivers seat to R&R the ECU.

Good find on the_red_baron! I hadn't come across that build before.

Yes, I’ve gone through the instructions and know I can do it alone. Unfortunately my garage is full and time is limited - Trying to do a 1031 exchange on a property I have in SC for a property with land in Northern CA, prepping to start my MBA (Go Trojans), and balance my family and full time job. I’d rather pay a bit for help and get it done quickly as opposed to sit for several months with an hour or two here and there.

Question for anyone - I have a 930 SBH with transaxle with LSD sitting from my project car, any benefit to running that vice the 915 for the 3.6 swap besides the obvious durability? I have to buy an LSD for my 915 if I use it. I know the ratios are probably a bit too tall and it’s significantly heavier…

I’m torn on the silver wheels. Picked up some 17x7.5 and 9” wheels. My daughter helped me change them out this morning.

Should I paint them black?

Then we washed the car because it’s my son’s favorite thing in the world.

The silver is growing on me every time I look at the car, especially in reflections while driving.

Anyone running gold?

I’ve been busy the last few months - Going back to school because my Seminoles were terrible and need a backup plan for CFB on Saturdays in the Fall (Go Trojans!), bought a great property in N CA near Oregon so my kids get to experience a childhood more akin to mine when I was young, but I’ve set a date with my mechanic to help with the 3.6 VRam install. July 16-19. I figure 24 hours should be more than sufficient but those with experience please chime in.

I received two of the last three pieces required yesterday, OS Giken LSD and PMS 3.6 conversion tins. Just waiting on the exhaust which should ship tomorrow early next week. I may have to modify the oil pan to get it to fit however. Anyone have experience with this?

Picture of the engine that’s been sitting for six months and some of the wildlife on the trail cameras I set up 300 meters from the house.

Now for engine break-in… I’ve read for hours and don’t want to make a mistake. Do I just follow Wayne’s book? Can/should I break it in with a high zinc oil and then swap to Mobile 1? That story of the guy with 700,000 miles on his 996T really had an impact.

Started the engine swap process today. My garage is filled so I enlisted the help of my mechanic.

Does anyone have a 993 engine with single pulley adapter? I think we are missing the inner and outer upper fan pulley so we had to order them from Sierra Madre.

See, this can’t be right…

But at least we’ve started work. Plan is to modify the 915 bellhousing, deep clean the transmission and install the OS Giken LSD tomorrow. Hopefully we’ll get the engine mounted tomorrow so I can fab up the exhaust.

And the bad news - Anyone have a spare 993 (non-1996) DME lying around? I dropped off the engine in February it was wrapped up in the crate, and now we can’t find it.

So as the swap progresses we keep finding things to fix or improve which means my mind keeps sending me images of hundred dollar bills burning. When we realized that we couldn't make the planned exhaust work I thought about just using something that was laying around the shop just so I could get the car running.

I realized I wasn't really thinking critically, worrying about costs, so I asked ChatGPT to analyze the situation.

I estimated my stock 3.0 was probably making around 140 whp. Given the costs of the 3.6 upgrade it told me I'd spent about $450/hp to get 250 whp. The WerksPerformance RSR exhaust and a performance chip would add about half of what the 3.6 added and only at $88/hp.

I think reason won over. I guess once you're in this deep why stop.

What ever happened to the $10/hp rule of thumb?

Gaining HP is never a linear process. The first 30-50 percent increase is pretty cheap and then it gets far more expensive after that. I think you will be happy with your choices when finished, as I have been. However, I would love another 50HP over my 290HP I have now. It never ends, and that is ok.

My good friend and next door neighbor just came home with a brand new toy.

I wouldn’t trade mine for it, but damn! I can certainly see the appeal.

Looking forward to getting my car done to go for a drive together and take a picture of them next to each other.

I have a 2020 C4S and it is a wonderful car and much faster than my aircooled cars will ever be, even my 993 twin turbo cant touch it. However, I rarely drive it and instead find myself in the 80 hotrod most all the time. I am just an old car guy I suppose.

Hoping to have the engine in the car this coming week after sorting the wiring.

One day I'll get it onto the dyno but Fabspeed claims 29 whp for the exhaust and I opted for the stage 1 tune on the ECU which claims 19hp. Maybe 335 hp? That's about what my 1999 Corvette FRC made when I was in college and the car should be about 300-400lbs lighter. Hoping it'll be a fun little drive.
