Mike - On the subject of speedo calibrations... every car I've ever owned, and bikes, too, have always had an optimistic speedo. IE, an indicated 80mph was actually around 73-74. I've confirmed this by looking at digital speedos in other cars at night, the mile markers, and the radar displays that the cops set up from time to time on the side of the road.
When driving my new Cab back from Florida last month, I had the cruise set on 87 in a 75 zone, thinking my actual speed was around 80-81. Well, I got tagged for doing 87 in Texas. I tried reasoning with the trooper about my logic, but eventually I shut up, fearing that I might be arrested and put in jail. He wasn't too amused.

There are so many variables involved, that the only way to get an accurate comparison is with the same driver, on the same "track", on the same day, with the same timing system.
I've heard of road test gear that uses optical sensors to read the pavement. The instruments start counting when you first roll and can track speed. They can also determine exact braking distances as they see the pavement "slow" as brakes are first applied. The "gray area" is between acceleration and braking in a 0-100-0 test. That could be a second lost!

For the ordinary driver, you might see more consistent results from combining 0-100 acceleration times with 100-0 braking times, both of which can be accurately measured with an accelerometer. The driver's ability to know when to stop accelerating and hit the brakes has nothing to do with the car's ability to acclerate or stop, and it's the one part of this test where driver inconsistency will have the greatest impact.

Accel Same driver for every vehicle;standing, drop clutch launches and lift throttle shifts (except auto trans). Decel Full braking occurs only after 100MPH is registered on the radar gun strapped inside the vehicle. No left foot braking with a minimum of 10 trials for each car with the best time used as the final. Several of the cars went beyond 100MPH due to the reactions of the driver Patrick Hong The actual top speed hit prior to braking was: MB E55 AMG-102.9 Audi RS 6-102.9 911 Turbo-103.0 Viper SRT 10-102.3 Ferrari 575M-103.2 MB SL55 AMG-103.6 Saleen S7-103.8 Lambo Murc-104.0

), the S7 had two distinct disadvantages that hampered its overall time for this specific test: gearbox ratios and lack of ABS. The S7 required a shift to third at 99mph(!) to get above 100, and the Lambo's ABS hauled it down from speed more effectively. Optimize those two minor issues on the S7 (modify trans or diff gearing and add ABS), and it should've spanked the Lambo. The issue with this kind of "narrow parameter" test is that certain cars will have specific unintended advantages, but in a broader overall test of abilities, that same car may be at the back of the pack sucking dust. But......it's still a cool test.

21.5 seconds
Well very very early this morning I did it. I had picked a stretch of road that was flat and straight with no on ramps. On the first attempt some traffic showed up way behind me just before I was going to get on the brakes so I aborted that run though my 0-100 time was about 15 seconds. I looped around and tried again, and this time no other cars showed up and my time was roughly 21.5 seconds, with the 0-100 at about 15.5. On the loop back I got in a slightly uphill 0-60 time of 6.5 seconds. I'm sure these times could be improved on. I just haven't practiced really hard starts in this car. I typically try to go easy on the old 915 in first gear.
Anyone else? I timed these runs by recording with a digital camera in video mode. It was sitting on the seat so there is nothing to see but I extracted the sound. I'll upload a mp3 of it to: http://www.benefield.net/zero-100-zero.mp3

I think the magazine tests are still fairly inconsistent until everyone is on the same tires. The fact that some cars went to 102mph and some hit 103+ is not as important as the difference in rubber compounds on all these cars. Are the RS6 tires really in comparison to the Saleen's?

They found it kind of scary that reving to 5k to get a clean take off with the turbo. Of course I wonder what could have been accomplished with the GT2, rear wheel drive and more power, not to mention PCCB...
