(non technical post, unless you want to turn it into one)
The car gets compliments all the time... even here in jaded Porschedom LA. 2 pretty funny ones were in the past 2 days. Yesterday, I was in a traffic jam on the 10 trying to hit the 405 South coming home from work after a PCH jaunt through Malibu... In the lane next to me was this lowered Riced-out Pickup Truck with 3 young Hispanic Teens inside thumpin some urban rap music....kinda like this one but without the stripes They had a Mr. Microphone or something and I hear this voice crackle out "Hey...Nice Car Man!" I look over and the three Hispanic Teens are giving me the thumbs up. I didnt know they cared. Then today... I pull into a clients office in Ventura, and am getting out. 3 youths, about age 10 are riding their bikes around the parking lot. The blonde kid says "Hey Poorrssh 911! Cool! My Grandpa has one of those!" Boy that made me feel young. He was sincere about it though, because I was in my clients office and I looked out the window to see the kids gathered around the back end of my car. The blonde kid was pointing at the Carrera emblem and showing the kids something....maybe talking about the engine in the back. So I felt good about passing the legacy on to the young generation Z... |

Yeah Sonic dB, what is the origin of this "Mr. Mike" thing?
Kindly sounds funny to be cruising making all sorts of remarks to the outside world...dangerous, I guess (given a certain propensity to being obnoxious, Sir! )

Along the lines of this thread, back when my son was alot younger (maybe 6 or 8), I asked him what kind of car he'd like to have when he grew up. Since he had grown up around Porsches his whole life (I had the 911 and a 944 at the time), I expected something along those lines. Instead, he said, "Oh, I'd like to have something really fancy. Like a Mustang GT."
I had to laugh. Mike

Man Actually Picks-Up Woman Using Mr. Microphone by Terry Y. Loh Chesterville, WA - Thirty-one year old Devon Paxwell was observed using a 'Mr Microphone,' while driving down Franco street in his convertible 1973 Dodge Dart Wednesday afternoon. He was reported to have been saying things like, "I'll be back for you later, Good lookin'," the line made famous by the early eighties television commercial that made the product famous. Paxwell was later observed taking down the phone number of 33 year-old bank worker Jennifer Conlin. "It's true, I did give him my number," admitted Conlin. "Well, he did say that he'd be back for me later, and he came back. That has to count for something. And he did say I was good looking." When corrected in that she was called "good lookin'" and not "good looking," Conlin said, "Whatever." Catching up to Paxwell for comment was difficult, due to the fact that he seems to spend most of his time driving around town, blaring out comments through his badly distorting A.M. radio. "What?" yelled Paxwell after this reporter finally caught up with the elusive four-wheeled, modern-day electronic Cassanova. "You're going to have to speak up. I'm a little deaf from having the radio turned up so loud!" "I've been using the Mr. Microphone ever since it first came out in 1981," commented Paxwell, "Yeah, I've been really successful with it! How many women have I picked up with it? Lots! Well, just the one, actually, but that's pretty good, I think!" "I'm just waiting for the version that will work over cell phones. Then I'll really be cookin'!" said Paxwell. As the light turned green and Paxwell's car drove away, he concluded by saying, "See you later reporter dude." over his car radio. |

Wait, you guys really don't know what a Mr. Microphone is?
They still make derivatives of it today... Basically it's a microphone that transmits a weak signal to lower FM or AM bands... So you can talk, sing, or "pick up good lookin' women

It seems that most of the attention I get in my 911 is from very young kids. Mostly boys age 8- 15. Maybe its because I drive a early car and also remember the mr. microphone.

My neighbour just bought a nice Mercedes sedan. My son Liam (5 at the time) was over looking at it and remarked to my neighbour, "Nice Mercedes".
The neighbour tells me he started to swell with pride. Right up to the point when Liam informed him, "My Dad has a Porsche". Poor guy was left flabergasted by a five year old.

Yeah... it's interesting many kids (pre-teens) are familiar with 911's and think the cars are "cool". I asked my young nephew and his friends (ages between 9 and 12) about this last summer, and they all said that 911 was featured on a lot of video games they played.

I find that young kids love my cars - 964 and 944. Interesting, I was reading the Ferrarichat BBS and they have the same experience. Kids go nuts over F-cars too. So one F-car owner actually keeps matchbox replicas of his car in the glove compartment to give to interested kids. I thought that was a TOTALLY cool idea. I have yet to find any gray 944 matchbox cars
but I hope to find some red 964 models. Funny story: One of the neighborhood kids recently came over to tell me I had a cool car. He is maybe 5 years old. He asked me how fast it would go and I said "Over a hundred miles an hour." and it blew his mind. Of course he has no idea what it means but it sounded really fast. So I said, "I'm gonna add a quart of oil. Do you wanna see the motor?" and he enthusiastically said, "Yeah !!". So I walked to the back of the car as he walked to the front (kind of like a Marx Brothers skit). When he realized I was poking my head in the "trunk", he walked back, stuck his head around to see the engine in the rear and said, "That is so weird."

This story is a little sad (for me). I asked my son, Garret (3) if he wanted to ride to the store with me. He looked at me and said, "yeah! Can we take mommies car?" Well, mommy drives a Honda van. I said, "don't you want to take the Porsche?" He covered his ears and in a sorta shrill screached said, "no, no, its too loud!" Kinda broke my little p-car-lovin' heart.

When I was in college in Pittsburgh, there was a guy with a Camaro (tinted windows, crown air freshener, chain license plate frame, you get the picture) with the funniest alarm warning message. If you got too close to the car, a loud Snoop-Doggy-Dog-like voice would boom "I know you wants to slip inside, but I suggest you step away from the ride." I'm not making this up. Of course, we all thought this was so hilarious, we kept lightly tapping the tires to hear it again.

I acquired my 1972T Targa when my oldest daughter was about 2 years old. While we were dragging the car home she made a comment about how maybe that could be her car since her mom and I each already had one. We all laughed, but she took it seriously.
A year or so later my wife needed a new battery for our truck and walked into a very crowded Advance Auto store. My three year old yells "Hey! Excuse me." A man behind the counter says to her "Can I help you little lady?" She answers "We need a new battery." The man asks "Well what kind of car do you have?" She answers "Well, I(emphasis here) have a Porsche, but we need a new battery for my mom's truck." We've laughed about it ever since. Guess I'll laugh until she turns 16, huh later, Rob

I guess I must be something right with my 4-year old girl. These are the answers she gave at school to this questionnaire. She is always there to help me when I work on the car and loves it when I pick her up from school so she can sit in the back.
