Nurburgring wins this for me. =o)

hcoles 11-13-2006 05:11 AM

highway 1 from Morro Bay to Monterey...going north is a good idea on this road.. you get 12 feet of extra road if needed...going south you are near many clifts. that's for a good 2 hour drive...start just before sunrise. There is also stories of cars out running the CHP... because they can only radio ahead and not to the side...distance 120 or so miles

another quick warm up the oil and tires road ... Saratoga to the top of Skyline on highway 9....be careful there are speed traps set sometimes...you can still have fun on a number of the corners 8 miles

Ranch Roads 335,336 and 337 in the TX Hill country. Hwy 16 from Medina to Kerrville.....watch that hairpin.....it will sneak up on you.

Another Vote for Tail of the Dragon US129 in NC and Tenn. this is a road that will make you break a sweat trying to keep up.

I also like the Blue Ridge Parkway, but this is more of a cruising road than something you want to go fast on. A ticket on this road will cost you $$ wise but the good part is no points.

My favs are the secret ones....

khwilson 11-13-2006 12:34 PM

I have been on many roads that were wonderful but always took them on a motorcycle - now I want to experience them in the Porsche.

One of my favorite rides is The Loop in northern Georgia which is Hwy 60 out of Dahlonega to Suches, east on 180 to Vogel State Park, and south on 129 up and over Blood Mountain (or visa versa). Blood Mountain is way better going north 'cause you have two lanes going up and only one going down.

Another favorite of mine is Hwy 60 going north out of Suches, then continue on Hwy 68 (I think) on the way to Tellico, TN which is where we always stopped for BBQ, across the Cherohala Parkway to Robbinsville and then Hwy 129 through The Gap / The Dragon.

Going outside the US, I took an 11-day motorcycle tour of the Alps once and there is little to compare with every single road I went on... WOW! There was one mountain pass road though that really sticks in my mind (and on my right leg since I still have a scar) and that was Paso de Stelvio... 48 switch-backs in a row - I went down on #45 when a tour bus decided to use up all of his lane and mine as well.

Wow, another legendary cycling climb appears in this thread. Cool! The Stelvio is a giant among monsters in the Giro d'Italia.

Leave Reno, head up Highway 431 (Mt. Rose Highway) up to Tahoe. Take Highway 28 around the east shore of Tahoe, then Highway 50 back down the mountain from Tahoe to Carson City. If you have another return to Reno via Virginia City.

rouxroux 11-13-2006 04:52 PM

My faves are: Nurburgring, Tail of the Dragon, Pig Trail (Ark 23 from I-40 north to Eureka Springs), Senic Hwy 7 in Arkansas (although it is WAY too crowded these days with blue-hairs in RV's), Mulholland Dr., Monte Sano mtn. in Huntsville, AL (the old road, before the section down from the "senic overlook" fell off the back of the mountain), and the Talimena run starting in Mena, Ark then going into Oklahoma.

Wow! I'm really envious as you guys have beautiful roads to drive. I'm stuck on an island an all we can do is go in circles.

However, this is my ex's favorite drive. lol

I take it that's what made her the ex. :D

I remember when they built that bit of pseudo-Italian fakery. Like Universal City Walk, but for people with a lot more money.

Hey Kalle, isn't Strada del Stelvio the road they used in the original Italian Job? Nice.

I have not been on as many of these roads since we live in the crappy flat midwest. We spend a lot of time in CO though. The loop from Telluride, Ridgeway, Ouray, Silverton, Durango, Dolores, and back to Telluride is spectacular. Another drive from Telluride out to Gateway and Grand Junction is awesome as well. The Black Canyon of the Gunnison is great also.

I have not done the Tail of the Dragon yet, but it looks great. HWY from Carmel to Big Sur gets my vote also. So many roads, so little time...

.This is a good one, It's a private toll road so it's no speed limits/cops. Very steep and twisty!

NEAR MANCHESTER VERMONT

The Mount Equinox Skyline Drive is the longest privately owned paved toll road in the USA (5.2 miles), elevation increase 3,235 ft., restrooms located at the Toll House and first parking area, 6 picnic and parking areas.

The Skyline Drive Toll House is located on Vermont Historic Route 7A between Manchester and Arlington, Vermont. When heading south the Toll House is on your right, on the left when heading north. Directions (Will Open In New Window). Map.

Enjoy the scenic beauty and the sights and sounds of nature at any of our picnic areas, many of which have marble picnic tables made from marble quarried on neighboring Dorset Mountain. There is a fireplace for grilling at the first area located 1/4 mile from the entrance of the drive.
Open 9am to Dusk, May 1st thru October 31st, weather permitting.

speaking of which...

anybody know anything about the famed private ranch road that LBJ had built so the freeway wouldn't inconvenience an elderly woman rancher in TX?

C&D had an article on it years ago but never gave out where it really was...

I have no idea. I even looked it up on the net and got nothing. I have not seen the original, but if that road is in it, I will watch it for sure.

If anyone ever gets to ride in the Alps, it's amazing. Non-stop perfect roads. It get's really good when you finally tire of taking pictures of 1500 year old castles and churches. Then you start to concentrate on the road and the scenery... here's a couple more pics.

Tschuess!

Wasn't in Texas. It was in Southern California.
Although it is a public road, it has been dubbed "Mrs. Orcutt's Driveway."
Here's a 2005 article in Car and Driver about their return trip.

http://www.caranddriver.com/features/9487/mrs-orcutts-driveway.html

Seems to be in a certain state of disrepair these days, so it's not really that great of a test track anymore.

If you want to check it out, leave Los Angeles (always a good idea) and go north on the 15 to Barstow. Go east on the 40 from Barstow (towards Needles). I think the exit is for Newberry Springs. I've included some sat pics to help you out.

This site below kind of blows as far as good layout goes, but it has a lot of information on re: canyon roads in the Santa Monica Mountains and others around the Los Angeles area, AND AND AND pretty much all over Southern California.

While on our honeymoon up at Lake Tahoe this summer, we took the incredible drive that goes around the lake and also drove a few side roads in the area. I think it was Hwy 50? that cuts through the mountain back down to the south. There was a bicycle event going on (hundreds of bicycle Nazi's) that offered some cool challenges weaving through them on that narrow road with two way traffic (sorta like driving in Europe). In late June/early July this was an amazing place to have been. The low speed limits and traffic made the drive a little dicey at times but...... well, you understand.
