Remember the Gull wing "I just vomited a little in my mouth" post? Well ditto for me. I did it because not one of the prize winning covins looked halfway decent to me. I did it because the supermodel in the Covin pictures is gonna need a crowbar to take off her bottoms. I did it because I like (yeah you heard me say it) the idea of a replica , especially a 550 replica. Right now I'm weighing the idea of a 550 replica vs a really rusty 356 coupe to rebuild vs an early 911 targa to rebuild. But a 911 replica? I just don't understand it. You can get that same "I built it " feeling by buying a 66 for 5k and starting from there.
Sorry to the covin "I built it myself" guy but if you end up with a car whose quarter panels look like they were glued on as an afterthought like some of those pictures, you might want to blame it on someone else.

For me, this whole thing becomes negative when someone tries to "pass a car off" as real when their intent is to project a false image of wealth or financial success. It's a lot like the guy that wears a fake Rolex. It is a CON!
What other motivation is their for the Covin? Cars like the Beck/Porsche replicas and Supertech/Ford GT replicas are a dichotomy in my opinion. They do offer exhilarating performance, high quality components, and exotic looks (they are copies of the genuine article). But, I just can't see beyond the jackasses that parade their Forsches, F'Ferraris, and F'ford Gt's around to project that false image. For that matter, it leaves the same taste in my mouth when I meet someone that buys a $20,000 911 and has no interest in the car other than "blinging it out" and parading it around like it cost him $100k. >>MONEY AND TAXES! That's why. I've only seen a handful of these things in countries where a real Porsche is taxed at 100% to 300% of its sticker price on importation.
Good point. I guess we should have a little sympathy for those poor sods living in socialist countries! ![]() Ditto on the $20,000 bling 911s. A friend of mine who does body work bought a front end damaged '99 996 for $12,000. He imported a fiberglass 997 front end conversion kit from England (our friends who are so fond of fiberglass) along with a widebody kit and some big-ass 20" HRE replica wheels, and of course, a carbon fiber kit for the interior. Now the thing looks stunning (he does good work), but under the wild $100,000-looking surface is just a '99 996. With a bad second gear sychro that he refuses to spend the money on fixing. *sigh* There's just no accounting for taste or some people's ego. |

I feel the same way about "backdating", which is something you only read about in the UK Porsche mags, when they take an SC, a Carrera or even a 993 and "backdate" it with the fenders from an early 911.
The article read "if you like the looks of an early Porsche but want the comfort and reliability of a later model..." How screwed up is that? Not too long ago, people would take the early Porsche and put newer body panels on it to make it look like a later model! This farce of a car was featured in a mag called "Purely Porsche", but they obviously have completely missed the point!!!! I waited years and years (decades) before I could afford to buy my dream early Porsche 911, I didn't try to take some POS and make it look like one. Replicators, backdaters, and Covinators - you are all a bunch of posers, and your lame attempts to recreate your dream cars actually detract and demean from the cars you so desire. Same goes for 550 replicas, Cobra replicas, etc. "You can't handle the truth"

Backdated cars are all Porsche. Replicas like the Beck 550, etc., have a lot of Porsche content. That's not true of kit cars like the Covin, which may have zero Porsche content. Totally different thing.

hmm...i guess you could always "Clone a Covin". Start with a 911 and put a buncha Covin stickers all over it.

I can understand replicas of basically un-precurable cars such as very rare GT40's, Cobras, and RSR, 550 replicas, are great when done right.
But covin's, porerras, 356 replicas are just crap and only a TOOL would buy one, when you can buy a 911 for really not that much, and yeah if you want to drive a C2 save up and buy one, otherwise why ruin a cool 70's 911 to look like a C2. Is there any Toyota Corrolla replicas out there?

Covin replica
I find it really amusing the way Porsche owners bash covin builders..do these guys think that the Porsche is such an iconic car that it cannot be replicated..I have built an AC cobra ..a GT 40 and now i am busy with a porsche 930 replica..and to all the purists out there..i have a ford essex v6 in the front..a toyota 5 speed geabox and a jaguar xj 6 diff.....hahahahaha...and beleive me its a work of art to ME..anyone can buy a porsche...be unique..and in my opinion the GT 40 is more iconic that the Porsche..and there are some lovely replicas out there...

I do not have any problems with Kit cars. Covins or otherwise. The final fit and finish is up to the builder. Anyone who has worked on glass knows this. I would totally drive a Covin.
Give these guys a break and ease up a bit. they are still car guys and like the same cars we do they just build their own. I have seen some amazing work on kits trust me. |

To be fair he bumped a thread from 10 years ago when 911s where reasonable. Now it makes (I guess some) more sense to build a kit. I don't mind kit cars, but I'm not a fan of replicas. The fit and finish is key though. If you take your time and do them right they can be very cool. I tend to like the 'back of hotrod magazine' kits like the Coyote Cody, or the mantra montage.

The only way i could have a 356 now is a kit and those are still out of my range. SO glad i got my 911 before the prices shot up! I still browse kit cars for fun. A gt40 kit is pretty cool. Have a friend that built a cobra kit car. Just sold my kubelwagen kit car last year, it was all metal

I just had a look at the forum and that's some eery stuff. When you look up close its obvious but from afar, not so much. I can't exactly put my finger on why but it's a bit unsettling knowing these are out there. Are there covins among us? Wait, let me go check my VIN. Eek!!

Guys, I think you all are being very unfair and you're all guilty of cyber-bullying. I mean look at these cars they're actually pretty good knock offs. Near clones. I mean I would really have to look close to tell them from real.
![]() ![]() Anyone interested in buying my 550 replica? ![]() I also have a testa-rossi spyder. This one will cost you though, it's in ultra rare gecko green.
