I see plenty at the track in the lower groups, why aren't there more in the upper run groups?
Are Boxster drivers not getting hooked on the track hobby, or are they selling and moving to air cooled cars, 944's etc.?

I had one of the early '97 2.5 cars, and I loved it...it was like a modern 914-6. Never had a problem with it, and I sold it to a co-worker who likewise never experienced any problems. Evidently some of the '98-99 models were the ones with the RMS and crankcase porosity issues.
Later on, I bought a '00 996, which I absolutely hated, as it was like driving a sporty Lexus. Zero Porsche "feel" in that one. The Boxster was WAY more fun, and actually drove like a proper Porsche. I liked the peaky, sonorous 2.5 engine a lot...reminded me of a 2.2 or 2.4 911.

I think Boxsters have a driving feel that can't be beat. The steering is responsive and comunicative. The brakes are phenominal. The engine in my 2002 986S gave plenty of power. A spec racing series would be a great idea for these awesome cars.

I thought a year or two ago rules were drafted / proposed for a spec Boxster series? What ever happened to that?

I've been thinking about one for a daily driver for me and the wife (she really wants a convertable). I'd have to get an S so I wouldn't feel like I was driving a chick car. If my wife would let me sell the bikes, I'd get one pretty soon. Unfortunately she has this pipe dream that we're going start riding more.

"They're a credit to the Porsche name." All you have to do is drive a later S & you'll believe this.

Personally I'm just not a 'convertible person'. I wish the Cayman had come in cheaper than the Boxster b/c I'd love to be able to pickup a 3 year old low mileage Cayman for around $25K. With the MSRP so high on the Cayman S we probably won't see those prices on low mileage cars.

Two of the first cars ran at the POC Tribute event. They were turning in sub 2min laps at CA speedway. Depending on how things shake out I might end up having one built. The crate engines are about $7500 and the spec is a stock engine. Pretty cheap if you happen to blow one up. Cost to mod a stock car is about $15K plus or minus. |

Awesome car!!
I drove one before I eventually decided to add a 2000 996 to my Porsche fleet. The Boxster is a great car! It is a true Porsche in every sense. I didn't end up buying it simply because I felt a little claustrophobic in the tight cabin. The 996 feels more voluminous inside (which it is). jackb911, I've got to think there was something not right about your 2000 996's suspension. Either that or it was a C4? The reason I say this is because I have a 2000 996 C2 and it feels very tight and Porsche 911-like. In no way does my 996 feel like a sporty Lexus. One of the reasons I bought the 996 over the Boxster was because I felt that the car's weight distribution made it feel so similar to my old '84 911 (although more refined, of course). Plenty of Porsche "feel" in my 996. |

I'd say option # 2 (I'll give 'em their props, but they're still not my cup of tea). I've driven a couple over the years and I personally found them to be boring to drive.
Maybe they can out-handle my car, but still. I prefer the raw nature of the 911 over the Boxster. Just didn't do it for me in terms of driving pleasure, or looks ![]() Each to his/her own... I'd take a 993 anyday

Current results are a little bit more what I was expecting. (..although I still thought I'd get more #2s than #1s.)
Keep voting!

I would be happy to own a used Boxter, one day. Sure, its not going to have the same steering feel of the old E, but what does? I certainly don't mind winding out a smaller displacement motor. (This coming from someone who owns a 2.0 litre Porsche, a turbo-diesel VW and a V6 full-sized pick up.) Also, having heat and A/C means we could have taken it on weekend trips, like the 600 miler we did on Saturday and Sunday.
I'd have one. it would be nice having a Porsche to drive in the winter, again. Les

I'm a die-hard 911 guy, having owned everything from early 911s and turbos to my track RS America. My '73 RS wannabee is a superb track car; handles incredibly with the coil-over suspension. However, I bought a mint pre-driven Boxster S this spring. I love it! The car does everything well; is responsive, quick and fun to drive. A completely diferent experience than the early 911, but that's what I like about it.
Glad to see you purchased another Boxster, Doug...enjoy!

JMatta I think you have the "ultimate" stable...a "new" Porsche and one of the best "old" Porsches. I can see myself having much the same in a few years. (..I think my RS clone will be a backdated 3.2 Carrera..)

How could anyone not like the Boxster? It looks great, handles beautifully. Maybe the best modern roadster around. I like it much better than the BMW roadsters. I'd love to own a Boxster someday.

Doug, the '73 is a blast to drive on the track; not quite as fun on the street as the suspension just pounds you and the fairly open exhaust is loud. The Boxster is fun to drive and provides creature comforts on top of it (it's definately louder since I put on the sport exhaust).

She's a beaut!
I think my RS replica will be a little softer. But that's another decision for another day...
