I recently purchased an 82 911 and it came with a vinyl dash kit installed (wood effect). I think it looks pretty cool but am thinking about changing it to carbon fiber or brushed aluminum.
Has anyone else done this? Does it look cool? All feedback is welcome...

Most will probably say the wood is uncool out of hand.
I would reserve judgement until I see some pics.

This is what my interior looks like.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() What do ya think? Rip it out? Try carbon fiber or brushed aluminum? They used one of the crappy kits that uses 3M adhesive and promoter to glue the parts on, instead of the good vinyl product that is easy to remove without damaging the original surface. Now I think I am looking at a destructive mess to pull it all off. That's why I am thinking of doing something else over the top of the wood. Would anyone else ever consider carbon fiber or brushed aluminum interior kits? Thanks for feedback...

Try a test...
The little piece to the left of the vent in the 2nd pic. See if it comes off. See if 'Goo Gone' or 'Goof Off' or some other will clean off the adhesive. I think you at least have to take off the 'wood' to put something else on. |

Definitely try a test removal as that wood is out of place imho. 3M may make a product to remove thier glus also. In the event you damage the surface, at least you are comfortable in that you are willing to put Alum or Cf in its place. Good Luck with it and keep us posted. My vote is for some brushed alum /Tony

I think the wood is out of place, but was done nicely so I'd leave it. The issue is how are you going to find another kit that covers the same areas on the doors? I'd leave it and learn to love it.
I sort of think the white gauges and underdash wiring may be the bigger concern. Also, what is that red thing in the left vent? The tweeters are good, but why aren't they aimed properly? They are usually made to be directional, and if they are off a few degrees you might as well not have them at all. Maybe yours are not directional I guess. You see them mounted at a 45d, and pivoted toward the ear. What is the socket to the right of the steering column being used for? |

Good points Rusnak, but I like the Aluminum, looks more updated and will fit with the white gauges a little better. I have been fabing my own parts out of Aluminum, brushed with a coat of clear, but also have had a few pieces anodized black with the edges still brushed in the GT40, looks very good without being "too much" The problem may be, you have that wood everywhere, so it would be nice if you had some luck removing without damage so you would not have to put it all back, and be more judicious with where you want some accent pieces.
Another entirely different approach would be to recover some or all of the wood pieces with the factory looking leather or vinyl. Very easy to stretch over and glue up pieces. I am making a custom center console and having to do that, very easy and looks more original. No pictures to post yet, but I will as I get closer to completion. /Tony |

Dye the leather to black, the wood will look better.

I agree. I think the brushed aluminum would be super cool !!
Thanks for all the great feedback. I figured I was on the right track getting rid of the wood look. And you're right, wood is for burning, not for a sports car interior... I'll keep posting my progress and everyone can see how it comes out.

The red button in the left vent is an alarm LED. And, I agree about the wiring. The PO tried to wire the stereo and alarm himself and did a smashing job, LOL... I am taking it to the alarm/stereo shop to have it all rewired. I'll keep posting my progress and everyone can see how the brushed aluminum comes out.
