So that is how the Japanese automakers make those engines- they use little people (note the vertical ladder into the crank "house"ing.

Wonder what the clearances on those parts are .5in?

Actually- how much diesel shake does that thing have? That will more than rattle your teeth!

Crappy engine

Used to work on the 12 cylinder engines for a few years. Sure did pull some pistons and liners on those

Furthermore, everything on these engines is so big - you even need a crane to move tools around. The weight of a cylinder liner is 9060 kg

B&W RULES

Even though these are big engines, we still have an additional electrical shaft motor of a measly 9 MW to boost power if/when needed - the single propeller is simply too big

Full speed would set you back some 280 metric tonnes of heavy fuel oil / 24 hours.

My current ship's total fuel capacity is just over 14.000 metric tonnes

"Even at its most efficient power setting, the big 14 consumes 1,660 gallons
of heavy fuel oil per hour."

Kinda makes a mockery of the environmentalists wanting us to take a car free day doesn't it?

Two things:

I suspect with the right adapter plate, you could bolt it up...and the car would rotate at the end of the crank.

I can't believe no one has comment on the heresy of putting a diesel engine in an old Porsche. Heck, Jake & I have been tossing that idea around for a couple of years and have been afraid we'd be crucified here for the mention.

Yeah, I know..It's Wayne's idea so it's OK.

Good one
Les

It's been done. There's more than a couple of VW TDI engines installed in 914s.

Testing Dyno

This is the engine dynamometer to test those engines.

Make sure you raise the rear of the car as high as possible and dont forget to remove the rear bumper when offering it up.

With 5.6 million ft lbs of torque I would probably try and slip some 16 x 9’s under the rear to make sure all that power is put to good use. I am sure a nice sturdy 915 box can handle that with too m much trouble.

As someone else mentioned already I would love to know what the tolerances are like in that thing. From our perspective you’d think you might drive a 911 through some of those tolerances.

Seeing those guys working on the thing makes me think of pouring concrete on a bridge project. If one of those workers fell in as they were putting the thing together do they just keep going? Would anyone miss him until the shift was over?

Nice catch! We might as well start cutting for our 24 in exhaust tips!

Two questions on the dyno... I have no yard stick to even give any number it might read any relevance in my life.

1) If it comes in a little light in the numbers where do you even start to look?
2) What kind of minimum numbers do they guarantee? So I assume if it’s a couple hundred light they would never notice what about 10k or so ft/lbs of torque light, who would notice?

Some tolerances:

Big bearings are typically: 0,40 - 0,65 mm

Wear in piston ring grooves: Max. 1,0 mm on overhauled pistons with additional chrome layer.

These figures are for B&W 12K90MC engines (900 mm bore). The Sulzer tolerances are in same range.

Here is that big prop (9 metres diameter):

- and some turbocharger work:

Castrol 20-50? But what is the capacity? I have the feeling that with the staircase in the lower cylinder bore that a run to the local auto store won't do. And I thought that the case it takes to change the 911 engine was insane!

Good Fun

Now this is an interesting and fun thread. My dad is a steam engineer and worked in electrical power plants. The steam turbines had an oil tank that held approx 600 gal. and the steam turbine used high pressure oil pumps that lifted the turbine shaft off the bearings at start up.
