Hey 83SC,
Why did you buy your P-Car? My SC has 180,000 miles on the clock and I take it to redline everytime I drive it. It doesn't smoke or burn oil (it does have the built in oil leak) No problems and if I had to keep it below 3500 rpm's to keep it dependable, I would sell it. These engines are hand built and designed to be raced. Out of the thousands of guys who read this BBS only a handful have premature engine problem. Drive it hard and enjoy it! ------------------ Bill Carcot 1979 911SC Diablo Region, P.C.A. |

My 84 comes alive over 45!
But I'll try to cool it 'till it's warm Thanks, Emanuel, for the heads up. As they say "RTFM" I'll check mine tomorrow Regards -A |

I have a '79 Turbo and it doesn't even run right until you get it over 3500 - hold on at 4500 because you are in for the ride of your life to the RED. =:-) ZOOOM!!
I always figured these are race cars and meant to be run hard at high rpms.... besides its more fun that way. Jeb |

I don't think I've truly driven my car hard until I feel the rev limiter kick in at least once.
Well, not exactly, but like Clark said - it is good to know that it works - so I test it out sometimes. I used to carpool with a buddy of mine who drove a non-p-car. He was a low-revver. Never got that thing about 2 or 3k. Drove me absolutely nuts. I don't like ever getting below 3000 rpms. I've never felt an engine that runs so smooth at high rpms as the 911. Both my old 78 and my 91 always feel like they are just getting started at about 4500 or 5000 rpms. Even redline feels like a premature place to stop.------------------ Brian Smith '91 C2 |

A driving instructor suggested to me that the optimal shifting points ( 2nd, 3rd and 4th) are 4500-5500. As a rule , First gear is a starter gear in these cars and not meant for a redline run to second. ( the 915 tranny anyway). The car should be thoroughly warmed , and until than, kept under 3500 , for longevity. But once you hit that first hashmark on the oil temp (180)let it rip . I don't know that you need bang up against the rev limiter, but for Gawds sake man ---air it out. I love just driving along, within the local limit, and hearing the sound of second gear maintained at high revs, especially with the roof off. The only downside is I think some of my neighbores think I'm going really fast because of the racket. My wife swears she and my daughter can hear me from a block away with the windows shut. My kid is always waing at the door so maybe that is true. Use it or you should lose it!
