I really need a cup holder!!!

On my drive to work my coffee cup fell on its side and continued to drip coffee all over my passanger seat, and down onto the rear carpet, all 20 oz. AGAIN! But I can't bear to put a cup holder in the SC. Does anyone know of a good coffee cup that doesn't tip over, or if it does, doesn't leak? I've checked the dealership and our host, but no one lists a bottom heavy coffee cup that doesn't spil when on its side.

I don't know what worse, no coffee this morning or driving around today smelling like a Starbucks.

I'd have to say....hold off on the coffee until you get to work. Down a cup before you leave and start a new one when you get there. If I drive the Explorer to work, I grab my coffee & put it in the holder, but....if I drive the porsche....no coffee for me until I get there.

Just as a side issue...my husband not too long ago ran an early errand on a weekend with the Explorer. While he was out he grabs us two mocas and enroute back home they tipped over. So, it can happen in any car even if you have the holder....but in the porsche...better to have no enroute coffee than the mess.

Sorry...I know that did not answer your cup holder question.

OK, When I go to the airport on Monday morning at 4:30 am, NOT having a coffee is NOT an option. And I'm not about to get up early to drink one before I go.

So, get one of those Stainless Steel cups from Starbucks that have a straight shape, and not too big around (I actually use one of those Microsoft give-aways from a training class). Then, take a nice clean cloth, and form a holding position in the door pocket. The cup will fit in snugly and never spill.

No cup holder installation, and no spills.

Enjoy .... Ted

I agree with Sarah. Porsches and beverages do not mix. The only drink I ever have in my 911 is a bottled water.

Amen to the bottled water. Occasionally, if necessary, I'll do a bottled coke. But only me, I don't trust anyone else not to spill. If there's someone else, and they want a drink (obviously I won't drink in front of them) we'll pull over however many times they need.

My advice is just make a shot of espresso or something the night before, and down it on your way to the car. or get a spillproof travel mug.

Sarah and MarkY: I can't stand the voice of reason. It's always correct.

Ted: RS Door panels.

Jgordon: Spill proof travel mug. That's it. Now all I need is one with a P-car crest or SCWDP logo. Any leads?

I'll second the travel mug or get a thermos. My local pusher(aka Coffee House) gives me a discount when I bring my own vessel and I get more coffee to boot since my thermos is bigger than there large which I usually get. Then when I get to work it's hot, shaken, not stirred, not all over the car and I have been a good boy to the enviroment...That is until those four shots of espresso hit my system WOHOOOO

Cheers, James

OK Ted...I'll chalk-up a point for you for ingenuity and I can understand your early morning dilemma...but let us know if your "never spills" becomes a "never say never." (I'm just joking around so don't be offended)

I am an equal addict to coffee while driving. And driving the P-car is what I want. So a coffee cup holder is a requirement. I am immune to all the flames thrown by purest out there so here goes...
I built the most overengineered coffee cup holder you can imagine. It is shown (and I get flamed) nicely on Rennlist. Go to http://forums.rennlist.com/ and search on cup holder. Look at cup holder for an '86.
Hope this helps. May not be much better than the "cup in the old sneaker" techique but my carpets are clean and I'm a safer driver when I'm not diving for an imminent spill.
Good luck!

Years ago I needed a cup holder for my Jeep. I did a lot of off road driving. I went to a boating supply shop and got a great cupholder that swivels in all directions like a ships compass (2 independent, rotating rings) so the coffee is ALWAYS upright. I rigged a simple mount on the dash, but if I were to want the same thing in my 911, I would attach the holder to a mount that would stick into the cigarette lighter, so it would be removable.

Nautical cupholders are the best you can get in terms of no-spills.

There is a very neat holder available from Tweeks that replaces the tape holder. I fitted it on my '91 C4 and it works just fine. When purist are around I fold it down and its not obvious. I don't think it was expensive, something around $50. As someone noted that predawn cup is imprtant! If you can't find it I'll try and find the records.

Caffeine has its place too...

This is version #4 of all of the different cup holders I've tried. It is made from a brass door hinge, epoxied to a 99 cent cup holder designed to slide between the window and the door frame.

It mounts to the dash behind the knee board. Located just to the right of the shifter when it's in fifth gear. Makes it very easy to shift and sip, shift and sip.

This is what I bought for holding my coffee: Porsche Cup Holder

I mounted it on the passenger side of the center console. It seems to work OK. Not too far to reach...I don't even take my eyes off the road. I'm not sure where you'd mount it in an SC, though.

I also used to have a coffee cup that had a flared bottom that seemed to handle most normal driving w/o tipping over. Don't know where you'd find one now, but it probably would do a good job when set on the floor.

Regards,

Jim

Not what you had in mind, perhaps, but it's as goofy as drinking coffee in a Porsche:

Thumbs up

Jim has it on this link! I installed the double flat that I see quoted at $89. It is very easy to install and is neat and unobtrusive when not in use.

Overpaid Slacker -- I would have tried that if I had a targo or cab with enough head room.

For the truly caffeine-addicted, I think there's a kevlar, Snell-95 certified model available as well.

I use a gas station disposable cup with a cover...and put it in the door panel, it seems to fit in there just fine. I just make sure that I dont fill it up all of the way up to keep it from dumping during corners.

I have a small collection of the cups in my garage . Just grab one, fill it up and youre on your way to work !!

I have seen travel mugs for coffee that have large bases with lids half the size of the base, kind of shaped like a bell. They are near impossible to tip over when sitting on the floor. Although they might slide during hard cornering.

Can't we just assume the frequency & g's associated with hard cornering are best held to levels inversely proportional to the level of coffee in the cup, thus minimizing the incremental increase in coffee stains on the headliner?
