I'm among those who suggest getting yourself to a good Marine Store, like WEST MARINE. There you will find gimballed drink holders, heavy bell shaped mugs with lids & no skid bottoms, all kinds of options. Boaters are every bit as much gadget phreaks as car guys.. And if you wish to carry a length of STRONG tow rope instead of chain? Don't forget to look at the Yacht braid, as used on sailboats. Has to be the stongest rope for it's diameter you can buy...

Paul--
I'll second the www.drinkholders.com unit - I just installed one on each door panel. they are very discreet and fold up when not in use. believe jack olsen has a similar unit (remember his being a vw part from prior threads).

I mounted mine in front of my lock knob and below the electric window switches.

just remember to close door first, THEN put cup in holder - reverse can be pretty messy.

fyi, they're located in so cal, so you may be able to save yourself the shipping if you're so inclined

Gimballed Cupholder - NASCAR

I actually have a really cool black anodized cupholder in my 73 targa for those solitary weekend mornings with just me and my double latte.....
Bought it from a company called JM Products Design, whose website does not seem to be working today...not sure what that means.
Anyway - it WORKS!!! It will hold anything, has a moveable top rail AND a bungee cord attached, comes in black and some hot colors, is about $19.95 and is of good quality, and easily removeable, etc..
No affiliation, just a customer

YMMV,

Attached is a picture of the cup holder I built. Cost $4.95. Recycled a cell phone boom, reclaimed some heavy sheet metal for an attachment base, and bought the $4.50 (+ tax) cup holder from Pepboys. No holes drilled and location is as flexible as the adjustable boom (ie: completely).

I've been thinking about this problem as well. Both times I went to the track in the early AM I held the cup of coffee between my legs. Fortunately I 'm done having children.

Two ideas: I've seen the nice folding cupholder, and was thinking of attaching it to the back of the heater control unit. That way it is out of sight and ultimately, removable.

Back when I spent most my day in a car, I had this gorilla sized cupholder (for big gulps) that sat right on the floor. Bottom adhered to the carpet fairly well, and it adjusted to a number of different sized cups. Given the cornering performance of the company car (Tarus), spillage was not an issue.

Pelican has a cupholder that mounts under the dash, but if I recall it was way too expensive for me.

Let us know what you come up with...

Don

I went in to Pep Boys and picked up a 98 cent plastic cupholder. The kind that hooks up to the window frame.

The cashier looked out the window and asked if the cupholder was for my Porsche. I said "yes". He said, "That will be $182, sir".

Smartass.

Thanks a lot, Slacker!!!

I laughed so hard at your drink hat that I passed my coffee through my nose! Ruined a perfectly good work shirt! LOL

cup Holder

Try making this for a cup holder- purchase a 3"X 4"ABS reducer and a white 4" test cap. Cut out the inside stop on the 3" side of the reducer. Silicone the test cap into the 4" end. Set the flat part of the test cap so that it is about 1/8 inch in from the edge of the reducer. Cut a vertical notch in the 3" end for your cup handle and you have a cup holder. With the wide bottom it is hard to turn over and works as a trash can at other times. It is not real pretty, but it works for under $5.00.

I get a kick out of the drink holder discussion - there seems to be a new thread every month or two!

I got one of those cheap flip up drink holders, similr to drinkholders.com. Did not want to bolt it to something that would show marks when I took it off. I bolted it to the carpeting adjacent to the door in the back. When flipped up it is barely noticable. A bit of a pain to get a cup in and out, but works good!

My solution: place decent sized travel mug on floor between center seatbelt attachments, stuff towel between cup and back seats, drive carefree, use towel to protect dash from sun when parked. Works great, no permanant install, and as any galactic hitchhiker will tell you, never leave home without a towel.

Are the 4 hidden screws of the flip down cup holder really hidden? Is the cup holder stable? It appears in the pictures to be fairly weak and with an "adjusts to any size" I wonder how well it holds the cup.

I've tried a couple of strategies and nothing seems to work. Like I've posted here before, the inside of my car seems to be in a weird vortex thing. While I'm driving, all loose items fly round the cabin. When I get to my destination, everything is on the floor. I think it has something to do with the "performance car" thing. Anyway, I give up. Driving is driving. Drinking is drinking. I don't drink and drive. I drink, I just don't drink AND drive.

Drink jasmine tea in a travel mug. If it spills, it won't be very much and will make the car smell better to boot.

Another use for Duck Tape.

On the way to drivers ed I had a new roll of duck tape sitting on the floor. It is perfect , when laying on its side to hold a cup of coffee. Its heavy and the sides have a little sticky so it will not slide. When finshed just put behind the seat.

Drew, that's actually a pretty darn good idea!!! And one can never have too much duck tape.

When the cup holder is folded, the screws are hidden.
The cup holder is held into the door panel by four self tapping screws - I suppose one could take off the door panel and actually bolt it to the panel, but it seemed like overkill to me, particularly since mine is not a daily driver.

the adjustable feature actually works well to handle different size vessels - and the whole thing is a lot sturdier than the cup holders in my wife's 528i - the dealer has replaced 3 under warranty and the car is only 2 1/2 years old!

Whoa! The duct tape idea is pure genius. Free (there should already be a roll of duct tape in your car), and even I probably cannot tip it over.
