Shifter Question

Hey folks, getting ready to upgrade my awlful stock shifter on my 82 SC, My question is the WEVO worth the extra money over the OEM Porsche short shifter. I also would like anyone;s thought on any other shifter

Thanks

I picked up an 86 Carrera that was tight all over except for the shifter. In the words of Borat, she was loose like sleeve of wizard.

It had a factory short shift kit so I didn't have to spend money there, but replacing all of the front bushings, Ed's rear coupler and the Seine Gate Shifter kit and the car was transformed. I mean it's still a 915 transmission but at least I'm no longer "guessing" about which gear I'm engaging.

Well under two hundred for all of the parts, and perhaps five or six hours of labor and that was because I wanted to polish my shift base into a nice shinny aluminum piece.

Renshift and Wevo both get lots of thumbs up.

I went with the Renshift because it replaces the entire housing and is adjustable between two levels of shift travel. Never tried Wevo, but I hear it is great as well.

The Renshift was probably the second best improvement I made to the shifting in the car. Right behind a transmission rebuild, followed by bushing replacement and an aftermarket coupler.

Mac -- I've seen the WEVO and it looks like a work of art, just beautiful. But at $600 or so it wasn't pretty enough for me to justify laying out that kind of cash.

For a sweet-shifting 915 here's what I'd recommend:

1) Replace 3 shifter linkgage bushings (ball cup, shift rod bracket, and shift joint). Search for Ed's shifter bushing (ivangene here on the board) and you'll get the idea. PP sells a kit with all 3 bushings for $22.

2) Properly adjust the shift coupler.

3) R&R your transaxle fluid with either Kendall 80w-90 or Swepco 201. Lots of opinions on which one is better. I've used both; my 915 seems to like Kendall a little better. Make sure you use a magnetic drain plug and a new washer.

4) Practice your shift timing. I call it "out-pause-in" -- pull it out of gear, slight pause in neutral plane, put into next gear. No speed-shifting or power-shifting the 915. Practice (especially w/new bushings and properly adjusted coupler) makes a huge difference.

5) Make sure your clutch cable is adjusted properly, and check (replace if necessary) pedal bushings. Clutch feel is a big part of the shifting experience too.

6) If you want the extra protection and confident 'snick-snick' feel of a shifter that is spring-loaded in the 3-4 plane (I do), consider the Seine Systems shifter kit. Probably the best $150 I've ever spent on anything automotive.

So for me, I spent around $200 ($22 bushings, $22 for 3 quarts Kendall, $150 Seine shift kit) and some wrench time (priceless) and my 915 shifts beautifully. And the practice is pretty fun, too.

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys, sounds like I will be happy and richer with a little work. However that being said hard to be rich with and older Porshe. Money is not everything

I have a Wevo shifter and am very happy with it. $600 happy hmm yeah prolly. The feel is good and the quality is there in the parts. Easy job to do along with the coulpler bushings. If you set it up right you will be very happy.
I got the "tall" as I like to keep both hands close to the wheel.
Just after insall before the centre consol was put back in.

+1 for the Wevo shifter. I got the short version and the shift precision is improved greatly over the factory short shift kit.

Wevo is probably great but my experience is with the Rennshift. It dramatically improved shifting for me. I took the 2" extension option which was also a good move.

I liked the fact that the Rennshift is a complete unit so it's very easy to install. I also had new bushings throughout. It's not much good spending all that money on a new shifter unless everything else is sorted.

Anyone driving my car would not complain about the shifting.

Like a couple of the previous posters, I've got the factory short shift, new bushings (coupler bushings are from Ed), Seine gate kit and fresh Kendall oil. The transmission is pretty fresh, about 9k since rebuild.

I've not recently driven a 915 that was totally stock, since my car had the short shift in it when I bought it, but I'd have to say that the factory short shift alone wasn't an impressive solution. None of my bushings were terrible, but fresh bushings and the Seine still made a world of difference. The Kendall smoothed the synchro operation just a touch. As noted above, it's still a 915, but it is a rather nice shifting example.

Just wanted to clarify a couple of things. Unless something has changed, the bushings our host sells are not Ed's bushings. The Seine GSK adds spring loading in the 1-2 plane. 3-4 is the neutral plane. Minor nit... just didn't want to confuse anyone. But overall, Ed's bushing plus the Seine GSK is fantastic.

You can't buy happiness, but you can buy car parts which is kind of the same thing.

The Wevo is worth it.

I have the Wevo short shift classic with Wevo performance coupler in my 78 SC and love it. It is well worth the money and transformed my car. Also installed the Wevo engine and trans mounts which also helped to improve shifter feel and crispness. Well worth it.

Thanks for the clarification. Yes, Ed sells couplers directly, not through PP. But the thread(s) about Ed's couplers clearly illustrate the value of and enthusiasm for replacing coupler bushings; that's what I was trying to convey.

BTW, the Seine kit spring loads the shifter so it's 'home' in the 3-4 plane and requires additional effort to get to the 1-2 or 5-R planes. Stock shifter only requires additional effort to get to the 5-R plane.

I bought a WEVO Classic shifter and was astounded at the improvement it made.

I then got their shift coupler and replaced my clutch cable and was further shocked at the difference.

Then I changed out my fluid for some Kendall and was even further amazed.

soon Ed will have a centering spring too - and it WILL NOT change the console look or need any trimming to parts - I have a couple prototypes in use right now and am working hard to get these launched

maybe by the first of the year - going into it full on....so when they are ready there will be no delays

so excited - work has been getting in my way though!!!

beautiful Will !!!!

Ed's product is great. Start there along with all the proper adjustments including the clutch cable, new (proper) tranny fluid and all the other small bushings in the linkage and that 915 gets pretty good in my opinion! Plus, Ed is super helpful Pelican brother! +1 to Ed.

I just replaced the clutch cable and added Ed's bushings, BIG improvement! I'm going with the tall Wevo to replace the stubby short shifter I installed over 10 years ago. Will it be worth the price? Idk, but I've wasted more than $600 on stuff that isn't nearly as cool looking as that shifter

So you are saying that it didn't make much of a difference?

How are your sychros? If 1st, 2nd or 3rd gears are slow to engage it will be a big let down spending the money.
