Installed my new Achtung Kraft mirrors to replace the factory mirrors on my SC. Really like the smaller size — without sacrificing FOV — and overall look.

The base mounts are a little smaller than the stock mirrors though, so will need to get my detailer to try & fix the paint around the edges.

Before/after:

Paint condition near the edges of the mounting area:

Install a keyless entry system. The Black Widow system everybody used years ago is no longer, so I installed a Viper system. I’m on the fence, if I want to activate the horn and or lights, when the car is locked.

Also, installed a new steering wheel.

I’m 6-4, so I moved the seat back a couple inches, to get comfortable. The deeper steering wheel helps, but the next task will be extending the shift lever, to make it easy to shift. Right now, I have to really stretch and use my fingertips to get in third and fifth.

Recently Installed updated fuse panel from audette collection, and NOCO lithium iron battery, weighs just 4.7 lbs.

Tip- don’t try to label the wires directly. Use zip ties to batch the wires and make flags.

Stealing this tip for when I install my Adapt fuse panel this winter. Going to sit in the frunk and work through it with some coffee and a podcast.

Finally fixed the felt piece that goes between the outside of the door glass and the door, it wasn't staying in the door. It kept falling out and rattling. Had to pinch the little nubbins together to get it to fit. Woo! No more water getting in my door!

I drove my 911 to go to my Mother in laws house 90 miles away for family Christmas. The forecast was for cloudy and dry. It was a medium heavy mist for 90 miles. So my 911 needed a wash.

Today was low 60s, and low winds, so the 911 got a through wash and clean up. I drove it for 25 miles after to blow any hidden water off. It is safe and sound in the garage with the car cover on it to keep any dust off. It will be a few weeks before it gets driven, and only in good conditions.

Extended the shift lever, about 3 inches. I got a 5 inch rod x 1/2 inch and turned the ends down to fit inside the shift lever about an inch. Then welded everything up and then installed it. It feels so much better now.

Changed my O2 sensor today - no reason except that I have no records of it ever being done. Came out much easier than I expected. Quick blast of PB and it came right out... did discover that both the brackets holding my catalytic converter heat shield on are cracked though... not a big deal, plenty of other bolts holding it up

Today I get the 911 out from under the car cover, and over into the work bay. It is on the scissor lift and on the mechanical stops. It will be cold outside tomorrow, but I have a nice heater in the garage.

I "get" to remove the alternator. Oh boy! It is starting to rattle, so the bearings are dying. I will take it to a local re-builder and he promises he uses American or Canadian made bearings. It might take a few days, and the 911 can sit on the scissor lift on the mechanical stop. It is wonderful to have the car up at a standing up height, so not bending over or working on my knees.

I report back when it is time for it to go back together.

Busy two weeks during the holiday break. Took care of a few maintenance items.
  • Annual paint chip touch-up. Crazy how much better it looks 😅
  • New hood struts
  • Removed and refurbished fresh air ventilation system including replacing electric fan and all seals.
  • Removed old non-functional windshield washer system including all hoses, fittings, devoir, pump and washer nozzles. Replaced ALL parts with new.
  • Inspected, cleaned, lubricated and tested windshield wiper system. Already worked fine and works a bit more smoothly now.
  • Replaced fuel tank sending unit for fuel gauge. We will see if this improved accuracy or if the gauge needs rebuilding.
  • Replaced door open/closed switches including all fittings and seals. Still need to disassemble the targa bar interior trim to inspect and address the wiring. My hope is to get the dome light to come on when the door are open like it should 😂

That’s it for now. A bunch of little items which I’ve been meaning to get to for a while but are not worth paying shop rates to address. You don’t see them, but it’s nice to have them work when you need them.

I got my alternator out. Ready to go to thee rebuilder tomorrow, if the roads are OK.

The alternator came out of the fan with just one drop using the 2x4 method.

My fan and housing are showing the 198,000 miles of use. What is the best method to clean them? Dry ice cleaning? I don't want any damage to the soft magnesium parts.

Any preferred coating to put on them while they are off.

I just had a bunch of my parts powder coated, this is the third car I’ve done and the shop here locally knows how to gas out the magnesium parts before powder coating.

Put the 996T engine and G96.50 under it for a clearance check. Engine looks like it’ll fit no problem. Didn’t have time to lower it for a clearance check but all the measurements check out. Interesting note, the 996 engine mounts are only about 1” wider than a ‘72s.

The transmission and torsion tube will definitely need some attention though, which I already knew.

A previous owner built a lot of the car, I’m assuming he did it when he installed the SBC and 930 transmission which I’ve obviously removed. I don’t think that’d be the reason as I was able to pull the entire engine and transmission in about four hours start to finish. But short answer is I don’t know.

It will be two wheel drive. Don’t want the extra complications and weight associated with AWD.

I lived in Colorado for eighteen years. Once a year, I'd have my airbrush touch up guy and my PDR guy come by and do all the cars. It was an annual spa day that made me quite happy.

I value precision. If I'm having gauges redone / refurbished, or replacing a fuel level sender, I will send the fuel gauge and sender into my designated gauge guy and have him match the gauge to the sender to ensure the readout is as accurate as practicable.

That cutout allows you to drop the engine and trans straight down...without tilting or sliding the trans into the tub before raising the engine/trans ass'y up.
It makes the whole thing even faster and requires a lot less fussing.
It's particularly handy if you think you'll drop the motor at the track where you may not have enough hands, tools, or level ground.

Gotcha, thanks Chris.

I installed a car cover. :/

From the catalog, it looked like it fit like a glove. After installing it, it looked potato sack and big enough to cover a 65 Lincoln.
