You can see the 1972 colors here. Farben der Porsche 911 Baujahre 1972-73

Viper and Kelly green are very different.

To each his own.

I'd rather have a 73 and not have to deal with that oil tank door.
That's just me.
The iconic RS did not have the oil door....enough said.

But I can see why some would want something that was offered one year only.
Just a personal choice I think.
No big deal to me.

There should be no reason why a 72 is worth more than a 73....

I always thought the consensus was the 72 was the most desirable of the longhoods. It was the longer wheelbase with the largest displacement motor for the early cars. It was just before emissions and impact bumpers regulations in the states, which changed the look and performance of the cars

I always thought the oil door was useful and unique. I must confess I have only owned mine since full service stations have disappeared so I have been the only one to pump gas on my car.

Why is it every time I read a post with "enough said" or "period" I feel like puking? Isn't one supposed to be awed when someone speaks their version of the definitive truth?

Jack Olson purposefully selected 72s for his builds because of the better balance. The 73 is the last of the long noses which will bring money, but then you have those fugly bumpers - ask me how I know.

Cars owned: 72T targa, 73S, and now 82SC - transmongrifying into the Red Rooster and a 914.

The Iconic 911R technically did have the "oil door". Nuff said..

The main reason why the tank was moved back to its original position was to address liability. It's hard to engineer out the stupid customer factor. That's why the RS did not have the forward tank because the T,E,S did not.

Hagerty might be on with their prices but, likely are also factoring insurance values from held policies which is subjective data to say the least.

Though the 73 MFI T is the same animal as the 72T aside from the oil tank location, prices likely reflect its proximity to the RS. That is the only reason I see for its placement above the 72. The ugly ass bumpers of the 73 should actually knock it down IMO.

Having spent some time watching these cars it's my impression that given comparable 72 and 73 MFI Ts for sale, the 72 sells quicker.

That is the mark of desirability by collectors and enthusiasts alike and is not always reflected by prices.

The 7R magnesium engine case and the 915 transmission were improved for the 1973. And say what you will, as far as the 73T CIS, it was an improved design for better fuel management for a regularly driven 911. MFI is cool but more finiky, and carbs have it's draw, but the cis worked well and was good enough till Motronic replaced it in the '84 Carrera. SC owners all seem very happy with their cars.
And Yes, those 4 rubber baby buggy bumpers are ugly.

The 72 is the last of the long noses with the original design bumpers which makes it the last of the original design.

With the current values, I don't think many are buying early 911s to be regularly driven these days. I believe that 'old tech' and 'unique' in some way, is what appeals to the current batch of buyers along with originality. And the cost of fixing MFI isn't swaying people away from it. In fact, cars without their original MFI lose value (even if replaced with a CIS 2.7L or 3.0L). Once set up properly, CIS can't touch MFI. EFI, though, is far superior to both.

I am surprised that in the land of limited production Porsches, that a 72 isn't a highly sought after unicorn. I thought it would be

At post #14:

"The history tab for the 73 T on the Hagerty site mentions the 73.5: "A mid-year change to Bosch electronic fuel injection for the 1973 ½ 911T produced what many believed to be the sweetest running 911 yet."

The MFI and CIS were not "electronic" and the CIS did not have a Lambda closed loop until '80 I believe, so they are a little off on their comments although encouraging and complimentary.

Improved design? Yes for a new target, environmental regulations. No for performance. And yes I know Porsche started to race using CIS, but they are a production car manufacturer and as such race what they sell.
When MFI is setup correctly without worn out parts and solid ignition it is bulletproof! And the throttle response is thrilling, the sounds glorious.
Yes, I have 3 '72's and a '69E so call me MFI biased.

the "T" can get some standard "S" options such as F/R stabilizer, sports seats, 6x15 wheels... however does anyone know what is option "comfort equipment", is this standard on the "E"? which is the luxury model of the three. Is this air conditioning?

No 69 comparison? It has many unique 1 year only parts in it's build and it is the FIRST long hood. The 2.0 is a good motor.
