I checked out his website. I don't think this guy is looking for someone to change wiper blades on a Honda.

I think you guys are being a bit harsh on Harold. At least he posted to the board and this might be a chance for someone that wants to get started in the mechanic business to actually get to work on more exotic cars. As I recall, in the past we have had a couple of threads from individuals wanting to know how to break into the mechanic business. On the other hand, Harold, if you really are looking for a trained mechanic, I think you are going to have a hard time finding one for $12 per hour that is willing to relocate.

I agree that wages depend almost entirely on location. here is sunny southern California $12 an hour is what the janitors get, but in some places that would be a very nice wage.
I have 18 mechanics working for me and their average pay is $28 an hour, but the younger ones can barely afford to buy a house in this area. it's all relative.

I wonder how many retired mechanics would be interested in moving to florida and making a little pocket change working on classic cars?
If I were retired I would think about it.

Just having a job in this blanked-up economy is a luxury. My dad (EE) worked for TI for 30 years and he had to find out from a buddy in a different cost center that they were closing down the division that he had been heading up (designed all systems for Bosch). Our long time family friend in Germany was his boss! (read- a**hole)
I know plenty of people that would jump at this job/any job here in Austin.

I am a wage statistician and I am not 'in the center' politically, so I am going to keep my mouth shut here. All I'm going to say here is that the macro-economics of compensation in this country is very interesting right now. It is changing. Some longstanding social theories are going to be tested, and the implications are frightening. I'd bet Jack knows exactly what I'm talking about.

We already know what's gonna happen.

Poor are getting poorer, rich are getting richer.

Unless of course, you're independently wealthy, like me of course. (big, big joke!)

In Hawai'i some firms will pay lawyers $15.00 per hour to do the grunt work simply because they know that if someone won't take the job someone else just got off the plane. They aim for the person who will take the lower pay, live on someones lanai, surf and do the job until they get island fever. There is always someone will to do the job. I just doubt anyone here would.

And near St. Augustine you could by a decent house for $75K. Ay of those available in California?

When I moved from San Francisco to St. Petersburg, FL 12 years ago my first job paid me about the same that I paid in TAXES in San Francisco... And I actually was better off at the end of the month...

Again, it's all relative... BTW - I live in a waterfront house on deep sailboat water. Care to guess how much a similiar house would cost on the West Coast? It's all about lifestyle and personal choices...

In Florida, what you find in the smuggler's boot is probably worth more than the car it's attached to...

So it's not a Porsche mechanic? @ $12/hr, it's probably a voting booth technician...

He doesn't need a mechanic, he needs a combination of EE, priest, witch doctor, and fireman.

Florida has some of the most unbelievably low wages paid anywhere in America. Being primarily a 'tourist-driven' economy, the majority of jobs seem to be hospitality-related, state, etc. and they ain't payin' much. In his defense, if he's living somewhere along the coastline in a small town, the average person is probably making ~ $8/hr. Florida seems to have a small middle class...a great number of really wealthy types and lots of poor folk in the mix. The price they pay for summer year round!
I went to school in Daytona Beach, which is the next town north of New Smyrna. Bigchill is exactly right about that area of Florida and jobs. Sunshine Tax. But, houses and property are cheap - probably the cost of a phone booth or doghouse in CA.

My wife worked while I was in school - very few professional jobs - touristy or hourly stuff or the wealthy that worked part time in other places. The job market there is weird.

I was amazed when I saw that pic of his showroom - I've actually been to that place! I used to have a MKII Jag for the wife - I stopped in to look at one they had sitting in the showroom (and painted on the wall inside!)
