You certainly can run the Conti radio with the old speakers, though I did replace them. The old ones really were done- paper cones evidently aren't designed to last 40 years. The rear speakers were incredibly shallow in order to fit under the package shelf; so narrow that the magnets and coils were inside/on top of the cone rather than behind it.

Here's the speaker discussion: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/946517-searching-speakers-fit-w-o-modification-80-sc-leather.html

The first thing I did, though, was to fit a DIN radio plug to the car so those wires need never be molested again. If I want a new radio, it should be plug-and-play.

Anyone else have experience with the Pioneer DEH-80PRS? I like the fact that as Tremelune mentioned, the display dims/powers off after a few seconds. Is there a way to configure the display so that it doesn't use any kind of animation and just displays the information? Anyone have pics of the unit installed in one of our cars?

A worthy mention is the Pioneer DEH-80PRS. It is one of the best head units ever made, and it has an important, rare feature: After a few seconds, every single light on it turns off. At night, when most head units are at their most obnoxious, this one is black. In the day, it's a bit shiny, but in its low position in an old 911...I don't notice it anymore.

Just ordered the above Pioneer Head unit. I will probably do a light plasti-dip on the silver parts of the knob. Other than the silver I expect the unit to be pretty unobtrusive. You can turn off all animation and scrolling so there should also be no disco lights. I’ll give a full review after I install it in about a week.

Thinking about going this route... keeping my blaupunkt head in place for the look, but using this solution with some new speakers:

Pioneer DEH-80PRS

I have the Pioneer unit in my car. I got it mainly for the auto EQ function, adjustable lighting and the fact that it's not as flashy looking as a lot of other ones. I was able to match the colour of my dash lighting exactly, and when combined with 6.5" door speakers and a powered under-seat subwoofer, I'm happy with the sound. If I want more power, I can always add an external amp.

As far as appearance goes, as you can see by the photo, it's pretty shiny, and with my targa top off, very difficult to see the display. As another poster mentioned, some flat black plasti-dip on parts of it may help, but it won't fix that display. However, it's pretty flexible and has USB inputs and bluetooth, though I usually just play CD's on it

Here's another one that might be worth considering for a long hood 911, or maybe air-cooled VW.

I wonder if I could just get some of the same non-glare film that is used as a cell phone screen protector and cut it to fit the head unit screen? I'd like to remove any shininess from the front.

I've done that on a radio in the past. It kinda works. But only kinda.

Those aren't really "amps," they're more like a bluetooth interface.

I kept my stock Blaupunkt (it's a 79 Turbo, so originality is important) and put a powered sub under one seat and one of these under the other:

https://www.crutchfield.com/p_109GTR104/JBL-GTR-104.html

It's a JBL GTR-104, and will give you the best of all worlds (unless you just have to have a CD player). It's compact, and puts out 100 watts X 4 channels. Has speaker and line level inputs. Built-in bluetooth interface. The only negative is that you have to adjust the bluetooth volume with your phone, but the volume buttons on the side of my iphone are not that inconvenient.

And for gits and shiggles, I can still listen to the radio and play cassettes!

REALLY non-fake.

How original does your radio need to be? Hannes offers your choice of any combination of Aux in / USB in / Bluetooth / hands-free / pre-amp outs for what looks like any radio. Have a look:

Radio Piraten - Wir entern die Sendefrequenz! - Umgebaute Radios

I contacted him originally about a radio for my brand new 1990 250D, but I do have a stock radio for my SC that could go in place of the Conti....

Anybody in the US do this work?

>Google translate says<

I am happy to build your existing radio to your liking! Currently I can offer the following variants:

- Radio with Bluetooth receiver

- Radio with Aux in connection, plug of choice. ** (eg 3.5mm jack)

- Radio with Bluetooth and Aux In plug

- Radio with Bluetooth and handsfree function

- Radio with USB interface and AUX

- Radio with Bluetooth, Aux In and USB interface

- A retrofit, a preamp output (RCA), to connect an external power amplifier is possible with any radio.

A few years back I installed this Pioneer DEH-X9500BHS CD Receiver It has bluetooth which is excellent, satellite ready with the SXV200 module. Has two USB plug-ins in the back which is nice for hiding the cords, a removable faceplate, CD player, HD radio, AM/FM, and you can change all the colors. I run green as it's the most subtle. You can tailor three lines of information to show song, album, station, etc. The USB plug in are compatible with the iPhone and generic memory sticks.

The interface is great. Plug in your iPhone and it reads it and starts playing on shuffle or some other way that you set up. You can find music through the radio head or through your iPhone. I have it integrated with a late 80s amplifier which it is compatible with and it sounds great in my cab. I'm not a thumping base kind of guy so the lack of a deep bass is not an issue for me, though it is external subwoofer ready.

The large round button is the volume control and the rockers on either side move you forward or back a song. When you access a menu, the rotary knob and rockers step you through the menus.

I went with Rockford T1652-S Component 5.25" speakers.

A great package and I've been very happy with it. Someday when it gives up the ghost I'll likely go with the Porsche Classic radio after its first refresh if that ever comes.

The controls: rotary knob and rockers.

The hinged faceplate for inserting/removing a CD.

The CD slot with the faceplate removed.
