Light alloy suspension in the 73 RS.

Can anyone elaborate on what that entails?

Similar to the later versions used in '76 Carrera and SC and 3.2 Carrera

Upper is an RSr lower is a later 911

If you mean replacing the steel reinforcing cross member up front, nothing much - unbolt steel skid plate, steering rack, fuel pump, ride height adjusters, and pull the two bolts holding the steel cross member to the tub. If lucky, the steel inserts which hold the rubber bushings on which the T bars ride can be pulled out, or fairly easily persuaded so the steel cross member can be removed. Maybe this can be done without removing the front A arm mount? The gain is slightly reduced mass.

If you mean to install a 935 style ERP etc suspension, with coilovers, money is mainly what that entails. Better adjustability, lower unsprung weight, plus less mass.

Someone was asking me to describe "lightened alloy suspension" that was in the 73 RS and 76 Carrera. He doesn't know what that means and honestly I couldn't answer him.

The earlier cars had steel semi trailing arms but from '74 up they were all aluminum

Ah, the banana arms. Other than being pretty labor intensive, you can swap out the car's steel arms with later aluminum ones. Everything fits. There may need to be some minor clearancing of the cone shaped area where the shock absorber goes, as the shock mount on the arm is in a slightly different place? But perhaps I am confusing that with what is needed to go from the earlier short wheel base 911s to the later.

It is a performance enhancement, because there is less mass and less unsprung weight. Not as much of an enhancement as, say, swapping in a 3.2 liter engine.

One suspects that when friends pose questions, it be suggested that they join, pay the enormous initiation fee, and ask directly.

Mine came stock from the factory equipped as the 1973 RS, that's why the factory labeled my 76 vehicle as a "RS spec" Carrera.

Yours has the 'same 911.83 engine as the '73 RS but the trans is a 915.06 introduced in '74, the '73 RS used a 915.02 or .08

You should also have the late aluminum trailing arms.

the '73 RS used 2 different versions of the fabricated steel semi trailing arms, the first 500 had the shorter versions w/ raised pickup points the later ones used regular longer steel ones w. regular pickup points

RS trailing arms

Not entirely correct Bill, the first 1000+ RS's (from VIN 1409 officialy) had the normal long trailing arms as used in the S version although enforcerced with metal plates. The later RS's used the short version as equipped with the M491 version (RSR). Earlier RS's had the alu cross member, 2nd and 3rd series regular steel version.

Regards,

Cees

Hmm I thought it was the first 500 H models, but Frere agrees w/ you the modified pivot locations and shortened arms were introduced after the first 500

All RS's from VIN 1409 were equipped with the shorter arms, and around 15 cars prior to that with random numbers. Somewhere I have all these VIN's if interested. My RS is 1410 that's why I remember.

So yours was built closer of the production run. As I understand it 1590 '73RS were built, not including he first 10 prototypes, 11 was the first production car.

My records show 1410 as originally going to Italy w/ M472 Touring option, I have never been able to figure out the 6 digit paint codes 1410 was supposed to be 484812

I don't know that's his car. Just A pic of a Dalmation Blue '73 RS

It probably didn't win much, while nice, the wheels are more race spec than oe spec.

Wow, very nice. I won't be entering my vehicle there, just sticking with local events.
