Frt Wheel Bearings NOT - Please Help!

87 924S. Grabbed the passenger front tire, top and bottom and got a definite clunk and some movement. Wheel Bearings!

Replaced them today (thanks, Pelican), got eveything back together, grabbed the top and bottom of the tire, and CLUNK!. I watched as I rocked the tire, and I can see the strut dust boot move as I clunk back and forth. I took the whel back off, grabbed the spring seat base and there is a small movement (CLUNK!) when I rock it back and forth. Nothing is loose, but there is definitely movement. The movement is not visible at the top or bottom, only the middle. Does anyone have any ideas on what this could be? I'm at a loss.

Any thoughts appreciated.

I am not sure what you mean by the strut clunking around ? Bad wheel bearing would not clunk...they would make noise when you the wheels are moving at driving speeds and perhaps have a little play if you push the car side to side when it is on the ground. The boot cover is a little cheap runner part that would move if the wind blew it...something is wrong with your struts it sounds like...how many miles are on your car ? Are the struts original ? I have yet to replace mine, but the original stuts (140,000K) are shot and they make all kinds of noise when I drive over bumb CLUNK CLUNK...??? Did you check the ball joints, control arms, etc...you can use a bar to pry on all these parts to look for any week points.

Spring could move cause there isn't enough pressure keeping it against the top & bottom perches. This is possible, depending on which springs/setup you have. Setup's like the Koni conversion from Paragon with adjustable ride height do this if you dont have lowering springs.

If it's all stock then I bet the top strut bolt isn't tightened down enough, or your struts are shot.

Sounds like the strut insert is shot.

I agree with hpservertech. When I "attempted" to replace my springs with 200lb lowering springs, I thought something was wrong because the spring was not tight and clunked around (before dropping the car back to the ground). As a result, I put the whole strut assembly back together with the stock springs as I was convinced that the springs were not the correct for my car. I have since found out that this is how it's supposed to be.

I would check the tightness of front wheel bearing. On new ones they lossen up enough to need retightening after a couple hundred miles. Agree on checking Top Strut bolt Steering tie rod, and A-Arm bolts and pivots.

Thanks for the input, guys.

I had just replaced the bearings that day, so I know that wasn't the problem. I also checked the ball joints, etc. and all seem solid. I am now inclined to believe the strut is the problem. We were looking at it very carefully (with the car still in the air), and it appears that the movement is at the top of the strut cartridge. I cranked on the retaining cap and it seems to have reduced the movement some - enough so that I think I need to replace the strut as soon as possible.

Thanks again - I appreciate it.
