AC hose experts-I need your help
I am rebuilding an early 944 and need to replace/rebuild two of the AC hoses:
Short one from condenser to dryer-can be bought for ~$100.00 Long one from dryer to evaporator- can be bought for $300+, rebuilt for $100 or maybe I can buy the proper ends and use just new hose without the metal tubing? I could also maybe use copper tube with some insulation and solder fittings on? If anyone knows the proper fitting for each location, or has any thoughts on this it would be appreciated. My benchmark is the ~$200 for a new/rebuilt combo and was wondering if it was worth doing some homebuilding to save money. I have looked at the various sites offering parts but am not sure what fittings to spec. Rubber hoses appear to be #6 on existing units. Thanks

..I have some AC lines for sale in this thread http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?t=440611
I think you need something other than those though (I don't know the terminology of the components short of the compressor.

The early and late lines are different, yours are from an '87? I'm looking to put in new stuff so I don't have to worry about them, maybe a misplaced fear.

Take them off the car and have them rebuilt. I can't remember what size the fittings are, 6, or 8? Any place that can rebuilt hydraulic hoses will be able to do the job, and it shouldn't cost you more than $100 for both. If you were closer, I could run down to the shop and have them done for maybe $60-75. I've never heard of anyone using copper for the hard lines. What's wrong with the hard lines anyway? Rusted?
For the dryer to evaporator, you can replace the hard lines with rubber hose, but I think you will find you are going to have a hard time getting the hose through the firewall.

A/C hoses use a special rubber that is safe for refrigerants and the pressures they are under. I don't know for sure if normal hydraulic hose is okay or not. I tried having one of mine rebuilt by a local hydraulic shop and after them re-doing the crimp 3 times and it still leaking I just bought a new hose. I had spent more on refrigerant and hose bits than the new hose cost
![]() If there is a shop near you that rebuilds A/C hoses then that is your best bet.
