Clutch grinding when releasing clutch pedal

Hello everybody...I need some help.

I have a progressively worsening grinding sound coming from my clutch when it is engaging. Usually from a dead stop in 1st. It happens about 50% of the time unless I really slip it slowly. It sounds to me like the clutch plate grinding on the flywheel but I am unsure because it does not slip at all.

I am wondering if anyone has any input, I try not to ask for help often but I (for some reason) quit my job with a excellent shop. Now I am sitting 1000 km from home in a crew house, waiting to fly up to the arctic circle.

I will have some time off and am looking to order all the parts and have them installed by a shop. I just finished doing a head gasket with all the W.Y.A.I. stuff but with the new job I cant work on my own car anymore.


I am looking for some advice on what the problem could be and if anyone knows which kit to buy (with new/resurface flywheel?).

Stephen,

Sounds like an exciting job.

I guess the noise is from a dry TO bearing waiting to fail.

You must be making a lot more CAD in the new job because shop labor rates --guessing for Canada --will cost about CAD1500 base++++for machine work and beer for the crew. Parts extra that fail when taken apart and of course the expected telephone call from the shop saying your need to replace-----just put your worst nightmare here.

For a base '86NA just go with a 3 piece Sachs kit.

The PP & Flywheel should be checked and machined....then balanced as one part together to avoid vibration over 3300rpm and above.

Lots of small parts inside the clutch to replace,
Fork rod bearings
Clutch fork if fingers worn
Guide tube
New FW bolts & PP bolts
Gaskets for the exhaust
Repack CV joints
New sound deadener under shift lever

Oh, the shop has parts you may not even know were bad---Muffler Bearings ??

It would be worth taking the thing apart, to see if the TO bearing is all that needs replacing. Maybe the clutch disk is fine. All the parts needed for a proper clutch job add up to 1000.... so after your get your pants pulled down on labor, you will have a pretty big bill. It would be cheapest to do it yourself. If you need a hand, I can help. Did mine this winter. It wasn't too bad. Just a lot of things to remove....

This is exactly what occurred on my 89. Your TO bearing has come apart. Mine was separated and had pieces in bottom of bellhousing. Best to go ahead and take care of it before it causes more damage.

When I did my motor change I found my clutch in good condition,however the release fork bearing were gummed up,the thrust bearing I stripped down, cleaned and repacked the grease,came out spot on still good to this day.
If the bearing is dry and has no rough spots it can be recycled ,they are an expensive part afterall.

Not at Pasco any more... off working for kenn borek now.

I'd love to do it myself but I park on the side of the road and have limited tooling at home. Too bad airplanes are all SAE... well all the good airplanes at least.

How long did it take you do swap it out? I figure I might as well change everything while I'm in there.

I'll milk it till June 6 then change/get it changed when I rotate home in July.

As far as tools go, you don't really need much. I had to get a fair bit of metric stuff for home, but use a few ratchets/extensions from my tool box at work.

I took my sweet time, since I did mine in cold weather, in a tent. I also had to order more parts, such as the release fork pivot pin. My flywheel was worn out of limits, so I had to source a used one, and than wait to get that one machined. The other thing that I did was clean everything........ and it took forever.

Just swapping it out, could take a full day, or at max two. That's if you don't have to wait for a machine shop..... Having a spare flywheel ready to go, would be a huge advantage.
