When I got my 86 na in 2010, the compressor was leaking as well as the high pressure switch. My condenser had a huge dent in it. Replaced the condenser with a R410A version, switched everything over to R410A and put in a remanufactured compressor as well as a new high pressure switch. My HVAC control unit in the dash turned out not to work quite right. Once that was swapped out, the AC has blown ice cold ever since and still does. American Radiator sells a good replacement R410 parallel condenser that is an exact fit.

I went ahead and picked up a vac pump and a set of gauges off amazon and got the systems running in both my my 944's this summer.

The 944S was sold to me 3 years ago and the PO said it leaked freon out in a day. I made the mistake of believing him. I decided to give it a try with my new gear and charge it up. Hooked up the manifold and saw pressure! So I got it filled up and low and behold it works great. Sniffed the system with a friends leak detector and found no leaks. Sold the car a week later and it was still working great. I missed out on 3 years of A/C by listening to the PO.

The 944S2 had a bad compressor clutch, so i swapped out compressors with a spare that i had and charged it back up after installing a new dryer and a few o-rings. It was previously converted to 134a and just needed a little maintance. Its still working great 2 months later. Its making summer livable in the car, as the 944 runs damn hot inside due to the glass area and the engine heat coming in the car.

Fix your systems, its worth it!

I haven't seen anyone on this thread talking about the Griffiths kits. Is it because of the price or something else?

The parts they offer are nice but the prices are a little high, but it's definitely convenient to have everything come from one place, especially if you don't have a hose shop near you.

I installed the Griffiths kit about 7 years ago (Khuel Compressor, hoses, dryer, and expansion valve). Still works great! I thought it was extremely reasonable compared to a new or rebuilt OEM compressor.

I fixed mine last year after going without for a few years.

It blows cold but on really hot days, mid 80's or higher, it will start making this loud humming noise. I am pretty sure is not the compressor, as I just replaced it and though most of the time it will only happen while driving, it did occur once while parked and the noise was not coming from the compressor, more like the firewall area.

I can't figure it out and I can't always reproduce it, so I can't take it to an AC shop to listen to. I am wondering if maybe it has something to do with the condenser icing up?

zrdeuce-

condensors dont ice up, those cool hot refrigerant from compressor
(the cond is in car front.)

You probably mean evaporator (below fan box & under firewall) where the cooling takes place.

You have a hope of looking in to the evap by removing top half of the blower box & lifting out fan assembly, lets you see some of the works; looking for dirty & blocked fins, freely turning fan, signs of leaks ( oily film near fittings)

Interesting, to me, anyway; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermal_expansion_valve

Working AC

Just got mine working this weekend, well sort of. It did not work when I bought the car 6 months ago. There was very little pressure in the system but the AC clutch engaged so I was hopeful. We evacuated the system, refilled with R12 and tested. At first we had 62 degree vent temps sitting in the garage idling. However, the fresh air flaps would only close half way and the water valve did not fully close. So now I am looking at a possible vacuum issue. We put masking tape over the fresh air vents to stop the hot air infiltration. I had 43 degree vent temps on my ride home. VERY nice.

It's an automatic car for my daughter. AC is more important the a few extra ponies.

I got mine working on the '88 951 about 6-months after buying it last year. With winter coming on, there wasn't much motivation considering all the other more pressing maintenance and repair items need.

I had to a get a 90-degree adapter to make the low-pressure port on the compressor accessible. Added a can of R134a with dye to find the leaks. It lasted about 2-weeks and I found it was leaking at the inlet/oulet hoses on the compressor.

Let it run another 2-weeks to completely leak out and pulled off the hoses. Appears the O-rings weren't working any more, so I got 2 rings from NAPA that was compatible with R134a & oil. Installed those and filled it with a bottle of R134a+oil. Been working great for the past 7-months.

Well, it's been a couple of weeks since the second replacement compressor and evac/charge and she's been working great.
