924 /944 fuel economy?
Hey I've been thinking of getting an early 924 or 944 NA someday and it would be my daily driver , so was just wondering what you guys were getting for mpg.

This will probably vary wildly from vehicle to vehicle. My '88.5 924 got up to 35/36mpg on a regular basis. My '88 944S is getting somewhere in the mid-teens, a situation I've been looking into since purchasing the car, so it's definitely a good question to ask EVERY seller and don't trust them if they're just pulling the spec numbers from the US automotive gas mileage database.
Having said that, if your only concern with a car after looking at it is the gas mileage, it's worth serious consideration! |

My 83 N/A got around 28-29 mpg running the same town/country back roads on my daily commute. My 85.5 gets around 25-26 mpg on the same route, but has the Wilks race chip installed. I do run it up fast now and then, but generally pull it out of gear and coast for a long way coming up to known stops (helps alot on efficiency).

Coasting, oh dear that's potentially dangerous.
My 924S gives about 23 mpg around town and 30 mpg on long distance drives, but that is using Imperial gallons which are bigger than US ones( we got to have one thing bigger than you guys, other than the obvious one which goes without saying of course)

PS-any number near 30 means the owner does not have an updated throttle cam or he drives 55 MPH top speed. The better numbers are for a standard shift, automatics less. The top numbers are highly suspicious of exaggeration. J_AZ

I have a hard time measuring mpg because the fuel nozzle shuts off erratically, and the gauge never shows above 3/4 full.
One way to do it is to average over several tanks or fill-ups. Over lets say 5 tanks of gas, mpg = total miles driven divided by total gallons purchased. Keep a log book, even. With my 944 automatic daily driver in rush hour traffic it is around 20MPG. I have never measured the S. |

i drove from san diego to san francisco in my 944, straight up the I-5. middle of summer, 85-95 degrees most of the way, AC on and cruising 80-85mph... filled up when i left SD, filled up when i arrived at destination, calculation worked out to 29 mpg

I routinely get between 28-32 highway with my '83 usually driving ~75 mph. Fresh engine, lots of stuff deleted, aggressively maintained. Only accessory is alternator. Driven at sea level.

OK boys,
Lets have your tire sizes and then calibrate mileage accurately... ![]() J_AZ

When using my car as a commuter car, I stay away from other cars (no tailgating/hard stops) do a couple MPH over the speed limit to prevent pOlice problems, and like I said....let it coast, the darn thing will roll in nuetral for 1/4 mile easily. I'm not the one out there slashing across lanes and pushing my way through traffic....maybe 30 years ago, but not now. The car is well maintained with stock sized Pirellis, and pumped up to 32 psi. It's not hard to get good mileage (much more of a concern when gas was $4.00 a gallon), and when i'm not stuck in traffic on a tuesday morning, I drive the car spiritedly, but not stupidly.

My 30 miles to the Imperial gallon is an average over countless long motorway journeys cruising at say, for the sake of the widely read internet, 70mph which is our legal limit. My 924S has 205-65-15 tyres, and I do have the updated throttle cam but of course the 924S has shorter fifth gear than the 944 so should in theory burn slighlty more gas but maybe the 924S's better aerodynamics compensate for this.My car also wasnt supplied with aircon, as per usual in the UK.
I contend that with the headlights up the aerodynamics are badly affected, as I deliberately switched them on at 130 mph on a level road on an autobahn and felt the car noticeably slow down at a constant throttle pedal setting. Tilting back the sunroof has a similar but slightly lesser effect.

On my S2, in typical mixed city + 70 mph expressway driving, 19 mpg is the norm. A tank that's pretty much all highway 75-80 mph, 22 mpg. I think I've seen one tank that was 24.
I am running the stock 205/225 staggered fitment as far as tires go. I have a sneaking suspicion that if I replaced the O2 sensor my mileage would improve by 1-2 mpg. I need one of these:

What would you expect for 3.0L V6?
I think it has more to do with top gear ratios than anything else. Top gears 944 (1982-85) 35:29 (0.8286) 944 (1982-89) 37:27 (0.7297) 944 turbo 35:29 (0.829) 944 S 35:29 (0.829) 944 (1989-91) 35:29 (0.829) 944 S2 (1989-91) 36:28 (0.778) 944 automatic (1.000) Last edited by djnolan; 05-15-2015 at 03:57 PM.. |

My average mpg for my S is 25.3 mpg. That is since (almost) I owned her, almost seven years, 257 tanks and almost 96K miles driven. Best tank was 35.1? worst one in the teens (car had issues at the time).
