See, I told you we'll get this one going. Backwards Balancer, it's been done before and you would have paid dearly at a Porsche mechanic to tell you this (if he could even tell). While your buying that Flywheel Lock, replace all those accessory belts, they are depressing me to look at them.

Here's you issue or possible issue that will come up when you get it started. The PO probably put a new TB on and maybe WP, but if it's been sitting for awhile, that TB and WP will need to be changed again. Your call. WP bearing seal will usually leak once you get it running again. Ask me how I know.

you are close to lowmiler (Todd Johnson) in Indy....his wrench that does his cars probably has one, maybe you could borrow from him.

I found my flywheel lock on ebay used for about $35.

so, just wondering, but why is this flywheel lock needed? i realize it will keep the engine from turnign when i try to break loose the nut holding on the harmonic balancer, but if i could get it loose would that be ok? or is there a danger involved that i dont know about? (im gonna get the tool either way, just wondering)

Uh, because it locks your flywheel, so you can break that Crank Bolt loose and tighten when you install it back to proper torque specs.

I guess the danger would be to break something else not using the proper tool and finding yourself buying more parts to fix what you broke, then furthering the joy of ever driving your 928. Thats all, just a minor issue.

Danger is that if you turn the engine backwards you can dislodge parts in the valvetrain. Not just your 928 engine buy many (if not all) engines can be damaged this way. Engines turn clockwise as you look from the front. Obviously you have to turn counter clockwise to break that bolt loose. When I did mine I had a very experienced friend stop the motor at the flywheel with a big screwdriver. My human flywheel lock. Problem with this is if your friend slips.... you're taking apart clyinder heads now as well. Doesn't happen every time.... but I've heard of ppl having this problem.

the lock prevents the engine from being rotated in reverse, which will damage or upset the timing belt tensioner and it's related parts. The cams/valves/buckets and such will not be damaged from reverse rotation.

if you are going to do this properly (you said this engine has been sitting still for many years?), then you should go ahead and do a complete timing belt/tensioner (kit) and water pump replacement. you would be removing the TB parts so reverse rotation is no big deal to break the crank bolt loose.

just remember, the crank bolt is torqued to 218 ft lbs, so whatever method you use will require substantial force to break the bolt loose....

i never said the engine was sitting still for years. i just drove it a couple weeks ago. it was a daily driver till i started this project about 2 weeks ago.

anyway, im gonna get the tool and do it right, no more risks or stupid accidents that could have been avoided by a 30 dollar tool. i looked on ebay and couldnt find any for a 928, but found a couple for a 944, will it work?

ok, im getting ready to start this operation. what all do i need to buy? i know i need to replace all 4 belts, alternator, water pump, fan, and timing.. someone said something about the tensioner? what needs to be replaced on it? and do i need any other seals or gaskets or anything?
