I can't really get my hand in there to grab that thing. If I reached in with a set of tongs or something, how easily do you think it would come out, and more important, how difficult to get back in?

Pass on removing that. Just move on with the SG/Hot Water/Gravel cleaning. Just make sure all that is removed after cleaning. Post pics afterwards.

in the mad scientist concoction to cleaning tank , a metal tank can handle soap/water/stone, throwing into back of truck and driving around or kicking it around the yard. A plastic tank (old) not so much of course,care. the seams on them can develop a leak (through age) and/or the fitting on the bottom. something to look for when cleaning/water filling , though they leak under pressure fooling you til its all strapped back up.

check where metal straps lay for cutting into plastic and new thick (uncompressed old foam) placed well at pressure points so metal doesnt touch tank when reinstalling. sure to check tanks plastic fittings where hoses reconnect and the threaded fill neck.

yea great if tanks good. there'd be correct epoxys (gas/oil use) such products if that time comes,depending where issue might lie for a fix. or new, to you, old tank (unknown cond.) for a replacement. ha ha then get tanked/ready for the next mission/s of refreshing the beast.

OK, so still waiting on a good day for the tank cleanout. Monday was supposed to be the day, but it was super frigid and windy, plus the post new years party cleanup took a little longer than expected. This weekend is looking a little warmer and nicer so I'm gonna shoot for Saturday. Not really in a rush. I assume I'd want to remove the strainer at the bottom of the tank before I go sloshing rocks around, correct?

Yes, remove it and cover all the holes with duct tape, etc.

I took a crack at the tank today. It's much better than it was, but not quite 100%. I need to figure out how to get all the little rocks out. I guess it would be easier if I was able to reach that rubber thing, because right now it's keeping the rocks from going to the bottom part and out. Is there a way to pop the siphon thing out from the neck? Then I could just dump them all out that way. I may do it one more time, but without the rocks. I'll let the SG/Water mix soak on the bottom for a bit, drain, and slide a hard bristle brush through the hole down there and give a good scrub, then wash out. Was also able to get the used horizontal grill pieces I got from 928 Intl sanded and painted. Here's pics:

The Fuel Strainer is fine, just clean it up (Carb Cleaner or Fuel) and it will be fine. The gravel is what will break up that rust buildup. The small gravel should come right out of that hole you just took the strainer out. Your call though. Trying without gravel is good too, just let the SG soak in that tank then so it can break it up.

I did the same to my front grills too, try to use something that can take all the wind and rocks that will hit it. I used Trim Paint by Duplicolor, that stuff is tuff.

Hey 1982-928, Kind of off the subject a bit but I saw in your signature vehicle spread that you listed a Turbo 63 Corvair. Man, 106 years ago in the 70’s I bought a worn out Turbo Charged Corvair Spyder as a project. Once I had that thing back up on it’s feet - it kept me in constant trouble with the local small town police dept. The Turbo lag was terrible but once that baby spooled up and you hit third gear “Look Out Ethel” you’d better grab on to something and hang on.

By the list of your semi-orphan vehicles - you’ll fit right in as an owner of the truly official "Orphan"- a 928 Porsche.

Dano-I got the same trim spray paint you mentioned in your thread, came out great. The problem with the rocks is that after sloshing, a bunch wound up in the upper part and the rubber looking thing is keeping them from falling into the lower part where the filter hole is. I jiggled it around for an hour trying to bounce the rocks out until my arms were about to fall off. Tomorrow is another day.

Yeah, your gonna wake tomorrow morning with Popeye arms now. You should put a bunch of Simple Green and let it soak overnight in that rusty area. Hopefully it will break it down more. Do you have access to a power washer?

I do but it would be a few days. I gotta wait on the some hoses to be shipped anyway so I may wait and use that.

Ahhh, not too far at all. Unfortunately, I'll be in Virginia for a few days and won't be around this weekend. Keep them coming though because I'll make it to one eventually!

Finished up the grill tonight. Will probably mount it tomorrow. Dano, that paint came out excellent. Screws that came with the pieces were a little short, so I had to pick up some longer ones on the way home and grind them down a bit. Came out pretty good. Off to medicate myself, super head cold bubbling up.

Yeah that Trim Paint is awesome stuff. You can also use it on the Windshield Wiper Arms as well. That Grill looks niceeeee!
