"New" 993

After looking for a couple of weeks I've found and bought a 993. Before this I was driving an 1988 Carrera. What an incredible difference! One of the small pleasures is working A/C and just the overall feel and different comfort level of the ride.

One of my questions is....is it possible to buy the faces of the switches, or do you to pick up the whole assembly? The indicators and cab switches have worn so that you cant see the white outline. I hope this makes sense.

Secondly, what should the compression reads be?

Thanks in advance, I'm sure there will be many more questions from me to come.

If you mean the switches in the middle console - only whole new switches. The dash switches have faces that can be changed.

Lots of simple DIY info on p-car.com for this car.

It looks great. Welcome to 993 ownership.

If you mean the console switches, yes, you can replace the trim. The whole switch assembly just pulls out. You can then remove the bulbs from the back, and gently push out the old face plate. Pop in the new face plate and you're good to go.

Here's an example of the replacement face plates. They're called "trim" here. Verify the part numbers before you buy, as this is from an old version of PET.

Thank you Kang, that is what I was referring to. didn't want to pick up the entire switch if it wasn't necessary just the front trim indicating the function.

Does that also apply to the stem switches? Can the facades be removed and new ones replaced?

What's a stem switch? I don't know what you mean by that.

Sorry..........my descriptions are missing the mark. I was referring to the cruise control lever, windshield wiper lever and the indicator lever. The white descriptions have worn away, and I noticed that they look like they might "snap" on.

I've added some pictures to show you what I mean.......hope this helps.

Here ya go! Again, verify the part numbers before you buy. Looks like you can get German, French or English!

Thanks Kang..................They don't make it easy. I spoke to the dealer and they have to send off to Germany for the parts.(2 little plastic snap on bits). It's funny, even at the dealership the see the absurdity of it.

The one for the indicators, they don't make at all. You have to buy the complete unit.

Dynamic compression when tested? The numbers should all be within 10% of one another. That's most important. Absolute values are pretty meaningless. Typical numbers would be between 180 and 200 psi, if I remember right, but even 150 would be okay, as long as all cylinders are close together.

So, with this car they tested it at 210-215. Are you saying thats
good?

Thanks.

Yes, if they were all in that range, that's perfect.

Cheers, George

Ashley, Congrats on the 993. I too just "upgraded" from an '88 911 Cab to a '97 993 Cab and while I love the 993 I do miss the "primative" 911 a little too, of course I had a sport exhaust on the 911 while the 993 is the "std." stock exhaust.

You really should get the Porsche PET CD. It is the parts diagrams and p/n's for all the Porsche models in PDF format. It's also good for figuring out how a part is assembled and in what order washers ect. go on a part. You can get it for apx. $15 from Pelican or any dealer, just don't pay $35 to the guy on eBay selling them.

Enjoy the 993.

Hi Bill...............honestly I don't miss the "primitive" feel of the 88 at all!

What put it over the top for me was driving in 100+ degree heat, deciding if to have the Targa top on or off, and realizing that the A/C was useless. I thought that I really didn't need that nonsense. I put it on the market as soon as I got home.

I'm very pleased with the 993. IMO a much nicer ride with better creature comforts.

Thanks for the recommendation, I'll pick up that CD.

The 993 suspension can be upgraded to be more responsive and will remain orders of magnitude more comfortable than the earlier cars. It will outperform the earlier suspensions as well.

The previous owner just had Bilsteins put on with Eibach suspension. How would that effect the ride?

That's a great upgrade.

Check this site out: http://p-car.com/susfaq.html

I have the M030 (upgrade by PO) and it is comfy but performs very well.

Beautiful 993! Congrats. You should post the intro on the regular 911 technical forum too. You'll get a flood of great responses to that beauty.
