Help - padding beneath floor mats

I'm looking to purchase a 964 and trying to ensure that I get a good, clean car. What should I expect to find under the front floor mats? What I see appears to be a rectangular area of some Styrofoam padding like substance that looks a bit age-rotted. The carpet does not cover this padding, only the floor mat. Is this appropriate for an otherwise clean, well maintained car? Any help/pics greatly appreciated.

the carpet set in these cars consisted (can't recall exact #) of about 15 pieces.....some of which were glued down, some "removable" as the front pass/driver's sides (front & rear).
under the carpet is a "lining" of dense foam secured by a glue from "hell" which requires lot of scraping/chemicals/heat to remove.
ck here or over at rennlist 964 forum for carpet removal / lining forums for details & pics.

depending on wear/tear of the 964 in question & mileage & and whether water was entering/had entered the underlining will show varying amounts of deterioration. but based on the age of these cars some deterioration is likely.

sorry have no picture of lining....but this was my carpets from last car (92 roadster).....the original owner & i always used 2nd porsche mat over factory carpet.

Thanks both. The description and pics are consistent with what I have seen. However, I am looking at significantly more deterioration. The black surface of lining is completely gone. The white Styrofoam-like material beneath is soft and cracked. I will have a PPI and have it looked at carefully but would be interested if anyone sees potential for a significant problem here?

....may or may not.
hopefully your p.p.i. is being done by a solid aircooler indy.
- apart from mechanical issues, in respect to the interior -
964 series both coupes & cabs (more so) may experience water leaks which tend to pool in the front footwells. so may not be a problem or may be ....you used the term on the original post "rotted" which seems to imply more than wear usage.

so could be an issue or not.....if no evidence of rust.....basically replacing the carpets in these cars/cleaning up the undersurface can be decent diy project (lots of posts here or on other 911 forum).

not sure of your location but if car is anywhere near snow conditions, have a long hard look at the metal surfaces around the windshield (especially bottom corners) and around the rear glass, as well as the panel below both headlights. these cars are prone to rust in those areas (expensive fix) look for any sign of bubbling or prior repair (i can send you photos of exact locations if need be).
