Progress has been slow. Pretty sure I have someone coming to assist with disassembly who’s going to purchase the rest of the car once we get the engine, transmission and brakes off.

And just this afternoon a lady backed into the front corner.

Some days you win, some days you lose.

Tell me this is a bad idea. I want to put a 935 K3 front end on the car.

Inspiration below.

Welcome to the world of 911 ownership! It sounds like you've got a unique project ahead with the ZZ4 small block and 930 trans. It’s great that you’re diving into a hands-on experience, especially after your career shift. Working on a car like this will definitely provide you with plenty of learning opportunities and satisfaction.

Your background with other performance vehicles and aviation will surely come in handy as you modify and personalize your 911. Enjoy the journey, and I look forward to seeing your updates and progress as you transform the car into your vision!

I figure it's time I update this thread as it has been a bit.

My '81 SC has been out of the garage for a bit getting some upgrades to support a really big one. I'll update when I receive the parts. Regardless, that has allowed me to make some progress on the '72.

At the end of November my family was out of town for the weekend to pick up her new GX550 (happy wife, happy life), so I took the opportunity to drive up to the Bay Area to pick up some parts to go on my car with the coming swap - 935K3 front end, GTU rear quarters, and rockers. I'm sure I got a few stares on the way home!

My gas mileage actually improved by .5 mpg!

Anyway, I managed to have someone come pick up the 996 donor car a few weeks ago. He works for a well-known 911 resto-mod company and is going to put a Cup engine and suspension on the shell. Pretty cool. And last weekend a gentlemen who races in "24 Hours of Lemons" picked up the SBC which allowed me a bit of space to maneuver some things around in the garage.

So I'm nearly certain the engine fits. I didn't have time to lower the car to check for clearance, but the measurements are certainly promising. Interestingly the 996 mounts are only about 1" wider than the normal engine mounts on the '72 911. The problem, which I knew, would be the torsion tube. Fortunately several people here have provided great images which provides me a path forward.

as you have heard from others you have to cut the torsion tube and rear seat area to make the 996 trans work. but with good reinforcement it wont affect the car adversely. good luck and keeep it going!

Do I need to reinforce it prior to cutting to ensure the whole body remains straight? I don’t want to just start cutting when it could cause structural issues.

I just cut off tear fenders to start to fab up the GTO/GTU rears. Probably the most nerve wracking thing I’ve done working on cars but I think it went alright.

So the 996 engine mounts are less than 3cm wider than than ‘72’s.

I can’t imagine there would be structural issues if I fabricated replacement mounts that had the center point offset outboard by about 1.5cm, right?

The pictures below show where the center point of the holes would need to be to accommodate the stock Turbo cradle. The begging of the ruler, and about 34 5/8”.

Here's my 72 with a 996 X51 motor....

Fits just fine with adapted 915 trans. Just shortened the Alum crossmember a bit.

Very cool! How much power are you making? I thought about using my 930 trans but had bought the whole package so figured I'd just send it. It's now sitting in the corner of that garage lonely.

Do you have more pictures of the engine mounts? Do you have a build thread?

Sorry Ryan but I had a family crisis at home and was forced to sell this 72.

I do not have any additional photos.

Wish I had been able to complete that project.

Keep up the good work.
