Why? Bulletproof mezger engine which can be easily tuned to the high 400s on stock everything. Simple chassis with an analog feel and next to nothing in terms of electronic crap. A few recorded instances of cars making it past the 600k miles mark. Amazing bang for the buck.

Oh, and a 2017 991.2 base C2 can be easily tuned to 450hp and is a much better car than a 997.1 tt.

The 997.1 and 996 TT cars have the same engine, no?
I know they changed the turbos and there’s that spinning camshaft issue, but other than that I was under the impression they were the same up until the 997.2 came out. Hence the 2009 last of the Mezger price premium people seem to want.

I’d love to hear Slick Rick explain that claim.

Anything 991 is too big for my tastes. Plus I’m not willing to take that depreciation hit.

Gt3

A slightly higher mileage 997.1 GT3 might be had for around that number - if you can get past the looks (I can’t) a 996 GT3.

That's Sick Rick for you, thanks.

I'm just channeling Pete Stout, on whom I have a huge man-crush. He didn't like the 997.1tt at all, and he loved the 991.2 C2, so there's that.

Plus, you're partial to the 996TT, right Rick?

I just bought a 996 tt, with little massaging I think it would be good at everything you would want car to do, had a 996 GT3 as well, a better track car but the turbo is a better DD.

Maybe something different. Shelby GT350 or GT500.

Doesn't SickRick think that a Porsche with more than a buck fiddy horsepower is uncalled for?!?!

All the track junkie 996tt owners remove the AWD and add LSD. Transforms the car.

2 Ideas ....

2012 Carrera C4 GTS .... Few around, the added hp is great and they were well optioned

2006-2010 Aston Martin Vantage-8 with the 6 speed ... Selling at a fraction of the sticker and performs as a true GT should....

Haha! It would be if it were on a scalpel-sharp chassis like a modern 991.2 GT3. Way too much car for me.

I loved my 996tt instead, it was a great highway cruiser, but simple and analog enough to be fun in backroads driving. Even if you couldn't extract anywhere near as much power as it had to give, it was a lively ride.

I don't think a GT350 is a great semi-daily driver. Very noisy, lots of vibration.

Ok I can't find the post I had in mind but this one is equivalent:

Quote:
I always worry when I have a strong reaction, but I found it interesting that a friend (and very knowledgeable collector) traded his 996 Turbo in on a 997-1 Turbo and went back to the dealer within two days to get his 996 back. It was not a cheap deal for him, and to his dismay, the 996 had already been sold. He didn't keep the 997. Then, a few years later at the 997-2 Carrera 4S launch I was speaking with a Porsche engineer about what the improvements to that car meant to the coming 997-2 Turbo and mentioned that I didn't think the 997-1 Turbo's chassis or AWD system were very good (too soft, unpredictable). Tthe engineer looked up from his plate, swallowed hard, and said, "We know." Even Walter Röhrl has since admitted that the 997-2 Turbo got a suspension and AWD system overhaul to correct handling issues.

[...] As to the OP's original question:

-I find its lag relative to the 415-hp 996 Turbo and 997-2 Turbo to be noticeably worse.
-I find its suspension too soft, with too much brake dive, acceleration squat, and roll on the way into and through turns. Combine that with an available center diff that even Röhrl admits caused problems for owners and "unpredictability" and I know I do not stand alone on this.
That's Pete Stout in an old Rennlist thread:

That’s not about a 991 C2. I challenge the C2 piece of it. The 7spd PDK based manual is a pile of shyte. Pete is a manual junkie. I can’t imagine him talking about a 991 PDK in such terms. I have heard the same about the 997.1 chassis tuning, but that’s all pretty easily remedied.

He loves the 991.2 and he likes the 7spd manual shifter. I'll need a day or two to dig up the references.
