There’s a puff piece in one of the 000s. One of the first 4 issues iirc.

We are talking about a $80k budget. Turbo S will be out of the budget plus they are PDK only. $80k will get you a nice sorted 07-08 997.1 TT Coupe in manual all in. If your budget is only $50k or so a 996 TT isn't a bad choice. Lots of car for the money. Both have hit bottom of their depreciation curve.

Maybe $80k is a stretch for an S. But what's wrong with the PDK? It's a freaking spectacular gearbox.

Nothing wrong with PDK. I just prefer a manual. Call me old school.

I agree. I drive an auto as a daily, pdk for my fun car would be a boring experience. I’ll take a manual please.

I used to feel that way, but then I drove a few PDKs. Now I'm daily driving a DSG gearbox VW quite happily. I don't feel like I'm missing anything. When I want to get on it, I just knock the shifter to the side and take over on the paddles. I wouldn't hesitate for a minute to drive a PDK Porsche.

The thing I've always found slightly ironic is that everyone talks about the 3rd pedal. In motorsports, we've spent years refining the gearbox to the point where you don't need to use the pedal. The PDK came out of racing technology attempting to make faster shifts and spend less time where you aren't putting power to the wheels between shifts. Having spent some time driving dog boxes, getting good enough at it that you can skip or barely use the pedal is the point. It's hard, so hard in fact, that on the 997 Cups they added blippers and rev-matchers to the gearboxes because owners were destroying them quickly, and sometimes catastrophically. Yet the manual die hards, always going back to their precious clutch pedal. The clutch pedal is obsolete.

If it weren't for the road-trip requirement I'd say a nice 914/6 conversion with 3.2 or 3.6.. But those things are a little too loud for road trips IMO.

So many good cars around that number.. I'd build a 996 GT2 replica with around 600 RWHP.
I've been thinking of dipping into F-cars, so maybe a f355 Berlinetta or a non-red TR with needs.

The 996 fits the requirement list a little better than the Italians, but they'd all do fine if used regularly. TR might get tedious "semi-daily" though - parking and visibility kind of sucks, as does dealing with the attention they generate out in the wild.

The clutch pedal is obsolete, as are air-cooled engines and many other things we like in cars... It's not always about going for the superior technology, otherwise people would be puking on pre-As and other old cars.

As a die hard, 3rd pedal devotee, I can wax poetic on how I learned to drive with a stick, how I enjoy stick shift cars, how they are more fun, blah blah blah. I would only buy a manual transmission collector/older car.

But on a new or newer car, PDK's are just plain better, and I'd buy one in a NYNick minute. Cleaner shifts, faster, just as much fun. Quite astounding, actually.

That is, if I were ever going to buy a newer Porsche again. Which I'm not.

I'm with MountainMan here (not like that ) - in motorcycle racing, you do everything possible to not use the clutch, so I got accustomed to liking that. A clutchless, sequential box is perfect. Need to get one of those for my 930!

Look at the context of this conversation. The OP has a Cayman and a 964 he wants to combine into 1 car. Why not consider a PDK? That’s the point. Not that sugarwood style rubbish argument you are making.

Having had a 66 GT350, my view is that they are cooler to look at in your driveway than to actually use.

I do know of a GT350H for sale if you're truly interested.

A friend of mine sold his 86 Carrera and bought a 991, with PDK. He was all excited about the PDK, but then his wife bought a new Jetta, with PDK, said it felt about the same. He said driving the 991 only felt like a Porsche when he pushed it to the limit, but it normally felt about like the Jetta. And this guy had Porsches since they were new, Speedsters, 550's, 911S's, even a 906, so he knows what a Porsche is supposed to feel like.

I'm sure you're right. I've already been through my muscle car phase. Thanks for the lead though.
