No doubt about that, pNutz! I'm about to hit the half century plus one year mark - dayuuuummmnnn!

At least I can take comfort in knowing that NastyNick and SickRick both have 20+ years on me! :)

Man, that's old.

I sure hope you aren't lumping me in with those people (you did quote me). I'm the last one to get an attitude about it. I refused to even drive a PDK until about 2015 because I had such an ill founded bias against the thing. All I am saying here is that it's worth trying and considering. It's that old contempt prior to examination thing. I am the exact opposite of what you describe.

I consider myself lucky because this 1 car idea isn't one I need even consider. I own 5 manual transmission cars (one of them a dog box and one soon to be a sequential) and that's not changing any time soon. I also have the luxury of not even needing to drive a car on a daily basis, but when I do, most of the time these days I drive the DSG because it's convenient and still plenty sporting as I dash up and down the canyons on my "commute".

The Miata, especially the new ND, destroys this POS all day long in both fun and performance.

I wouldn’t call it a pos. I had one of the first ones delivered in the States. It’s a great chassis but underpowered by 50-100hp. It wasn’t engaging enough to keep after I had reverse engineered it and made parts. If they ever released an STi tuned turbo version they might win me back. But as it is, it falls flat.

No Matt, I don’t lump you in with people who are quick to have an attitude, sorry that using your quote seem to infer that point of view. I usually agree with most of you insightful comments.

I would just like to have a choice of a manual or an automatic, and precious few auto companies offer drivers a choice these days. I know that some people who drive automatics may not “understand” the love of a challenging shift (let’s face it, worn 915’s can be a challenge), and some people (myself included) who love manuals don’t understand automatic lovers, but can’t we all just get along - I just want a choice...

If you want an N/A car Porsche that can do it all, buy a 997 GTS in manual. Turbo comfort with GT3ish power. You want a boosted car, 997 turbo in manual. Both of those monsters can be had for less than 80k and can do all the things you want it to do without an issue.

Cool. Thank you. I couldn't care less if someone disagrees with me on a matter of opinion, but I really can't stand to be misunderstood. I just wanted to be sure.

For me the big complaint about the auto "slushbox" was always the torque converter. I don't mind one bit having the car actuate the clutch for me, as long as there's direct drive to the gearbox and no loss of power through the TC. And of course the ability to dictate what gear I'm in based on my needs in the moment. That's why the double clutch gearboxes work just fine for me.

Drive a Pana GTS or Turbo..... Dorking w/ style.....

I am always considering them for a DD...….

I'm re-posting the criteria for those of you debating SUVs as an option.

1. 80k Budget, give or take a bit
2. 2 doors
3. Comfortable enough to be a semi daily driver
4. Sporty enough to be able to handle 3-4 track days a year with minimal mods (brake fluid, pads)

5. Reliable enough to be able to plan road trips without worry
6. Reasonable expectation that it will not suffer massive depreciation in a 3-5 year time frame

And...go!

Another good example that fits the OPs criteria. Fun cars but I would still take a 07-08 997TT Coupe manual or high mileage 997 GT3 over a GTS.

I am a fan of the ND, particularly the weight.
However, apples and oranges.
ND is not a coupe, and suspension is mush.
If this is a POS, then you must also hate air cooled 911's.
I suspect you've never actually driven one.

mbintx 01-22-2019 04:20 PM

I step away for a minute and y’all are arguing about Jeeps and Toyotas...

To clarify, I am wanting to stay in the Porsche camp. I will say I like the 997 GTS idea. Need to investigate what I’m giving up vs a 997TT...

Boost. 997TT are freakish fast especially with tune which you don't really need. Changing out the factory clutch, getting a DSC box, and function first shifter upgrade really transforms the car.

The 997 GTS sounds better (NA) and has a more classic 911 feel. Never driven one but have driven a manual 997 Carrera S with a Powerkit which I believe is similar. Lots of info & enthusiasts on Rennlist regarding these models. Best of luck with your search.

Matt Monson 01-22-2019 08:18 PM

You’re also giving up the added weight and the added traction of the AWD. It feels very different.

pmax 01-22-2019 09:24 PM

OP's long gone I suppose, lol.
