Not really a Ruf, but will BaT buyer’s care?

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1987-porsche-911-carrera-targa-14/?fbclid=IwAR22G_eRIoAC3GLLqTMc-PTy7NLcqPcXJlrcrlxJB7YioDsh8qgsf8AAcis

Looks like a nice car. You think it will bring better than 930 money or not?

I’d expect it to sell for a premium with the RUF bits on it, even though it’s not a full RUF conversion.

shocked they didn't fix the trans before this auction. That's going to seriously nerf the outcome.

Perhaps I’m in the minority but, that car doesn’t do much for me. It does look like the mileage is accurate judging by the work orders and the overall condition but, why did the third gear synchro go out with such low miles ? These boxes are pretty robust but it’s usually second gear that goes first. Looks like it has a boost controller aka dial of death. I’m guessing it gets to low nineties. Maybe more given the low miles and the gawd awfully heavy RUF wheels and outdated, underperforming, overpriced RUF intercooler.

There are a bunch of 930's that had various Ruf bits and pieces installed by authorized dealers back in the day (mine included); some of those mods add more value than others (as Mr. Bush pointed out). Does the average punter know the difference?

From my experience with the 930s I had / have, 2nd gear synchro' s 1-2nd shift around 55MPH are usually street driven. 2nd to 3rd gets used more often on track or open road as few if any 1-2nd shifts vs many 2nd to 3rd. Syncros, dog teeth are common on most 930 by 60K unless granny driven. Usually $2K,for syncro,s & $3K with dog teeth, so realistically should not be a big factor for just that.

95.5k reserve not met. I'm surprised it didn't sell at that price

I guess the seller thinks it’s special. I’m surprised to see it going over $90k to be honest. I was figuring $80-85k

The Dial of Death is a deal killer for me. You never know who cranked it up and trashed the motor even with the low miles.

$95k is ALL the money for that car IMO

Seller's going to sit on it for a long time if he expects to get much more than that.

Peanut gallery there ..... "Oh just drop in a G50"

Yep. Totally agree. You’re asking for problems buying someone else’s dial a death.

Cost me $20k to learn that lesson and that was about 18 years ago. I am sure its more now.

I can’t count how many times I’ve been at a mechanic’s shop and seen an engine getting rebuilt because the dial was turned up too high. That dial should be set and never touched. If touched, it should only be used to turn it down when needed, not up. I think that’s what RUF’s original intention was with that dial, so he could turn it down in the winter time when the roads were bad.

And the air is denser. Us high altitude dwellers welcome the free HP bump we get in the cold, but on an old car like a 930 it might be a problem more than a welcome improvement.

Yup, me too. 22 years ago. There's an old saying with those knobs- "they always run fastest right before they blow up"

Where some people get into trouble with those manual boost controllers is that they install and use them without having any sort of AFR monitoring device onboard. And of course, the 930's stoneage-tech ignition and fueling systems don't have knock sensing, active timing control, or active fuel enrichment (enrichment is based on boost pressure, but the stock WUR is very limited there, and even a modified one has its limits and does not compensate automatically when boost pressure is increased past what it was tuned for).

When boost pressure is increased, the dynamic compression ratio goes up (big bump in horsepower and torque) and that requires more fuel (enrichment) - if no increase in fuel (lean condition), then very high cylinder head temps result and detonation follows.

So obviously, it is nuts (different than pNutz!) to install one of those controllers without also being able to monitor AFRs and without installing a modified/adjustable WUR which you've tuned for the added boost pressure.

Not sure why a rather stock 930 with some RUF brand mods and wheels is now touted as a "RUF 930"....gimmick

The bidders, the seller and BaT all bought into that fallacy.

That would be the GR discount.

The crappy pics do not help either with the BAT crowd.
