BAT blues / can someone take a look at this fender?

I currently have my car on BAT and a commenter mentioned that he looked at a car that he *thinks* is mine and his buddy found evidence of a left rear fender repair.

I just spent a few hours looking at everything and I can only find evidence of too much paint applied in the rain gutter.

Can you guys look at these photos and see if anything looks suspect? I really don't want to misrepresent the car as accident free if it's not.

I'd be mega super upset if someone was trying to sabotage my auction, as all info the commenter provided about the "car he looked at" could be deduced from the ad photos and attached carfax.

Thanks a million,

Matt

Have you paint metered the area in question?

I don't have access to one but I know the entire car has been resprayed, and it's presented accordingly.

Then it wouldn't matter if you paint meter it. I am certainly no expert, but I see no evidence of any repairs on that panel. Unless you find some, I would call him out and ask him to be more certain than he thinks his friend might have looked at a car that might have had damage and it might be yours. Kind of a BS comment.

Or maybe take it to a reputable shop and have them look it over and declare that they see no evidence...?

Now that I've slept on it I am no longer upset, I just think the guy was mistaken.

I can't find any evidence of repairs and added 15 photos of the left rear of the car from every angle that support my conclusion.

BAT was very helpful in approving the additional photos quickly.

In retrospect I was more upset about the possibility that something managed to escape my eye for five years of crawling around, in, out, and underneath the car. Then I realized how great the car is and how strong of an emotional attachment I have to it. And now I regret putting it up for sale. Ah, c'est la vie.

Honestly, that's one of the more untouched undersides I have ever seen on BaT. People can say what they want, but to me that's one unrepaired rear area, and that's what I would want to see on a car I'm considering buying. The photos that I see on BaT with the overspray and 'black resto in a can' jobs to conceal is not even remotely going on here. No shenanigans I see.

Take a breather and that comment can go where so many can go on BaT (I'll leave it up to your imagination).

I don't see any evidence of repair either but hard to tell from pics. I would never state definitely that a car was accident free unless I owned it since brand new because who the hell really knows- you can use dealer/auction speak- car appears to never have sustained any major collision damage.

GLWS,

Phil

Is there undercoating on both sides? Drivers side looks bare.

A good body guy can make prior work undetectable, my 79 turbo had a quarter replaced and it looked like the factory did it.

The fender has been replaced. The backside of the door jam should be undercoated and undercoating is missing from the entire inner surface of the quarter panel. I've attached a picture below of what an original area would look like. There is also a significant 'plug' of undercoat and seam sealer where the quarter meets the 'kidney bowl' and the structural outer rocker panel which is where rust tends to form rotting out the door jamb and rocker

That said, who cares? These cars are ~30 years old and have been driven. Yours looks to have been repaired properly with a complete panel from Porsche. People think every car should be collectors quality and of course they should pay a driver quality price. They also put too much faith in Carfax and similar history reports to suggest that their car is incident free. Lots of stuff happened in the '80s and early '90s that never made its way into these type of history reports.

I agree that it has been repaired, Not horrible but not to Porsche production standards, both from underneath and where it was joined in the engine bay area. Pretty obvious not to original standards repair. Most likely the quarter was replaced . In my estimation they should have taken more care when they cut the old quarter off. Also could have prepared the inner body better and re undercoated better for further rust protection. Sorry to be part of bad news. Best to sell with a disclosure & inspection from a competent Porsche body repair shop specialist now that the can of worms is opened and the previous damage repair is realized, ( better now than after the sale ) explaining the extent of the previous damage and the deficiencies of the previous repair, including inspection of the rest of the car for previous repair and adjust your expectations accordingly now that you know. Also include a estimate of the cost to finish it right would not be a bad idea as most of the heavy lifting seems to have been done. If the rest of the car is nice it could still be a better car than many out there. Good luck.

Agree with Anthony. This doesn't look factory at all.

Thanks Pelican. While not the news I hoped for, I guess it's better to know. I'll be separated from the car until Sunday night so I'll have no time to have the car checked out before the end of the auction.

Now I just cross my fingers and hope the car doesn't sell.

If you don't want to sell the car, just tell BAT you lit the car on fire.

Are you contractually liable for selling it or is it like evilbay where you can change your ? I've never sold anything on either so not certain about the finer details.

In my book, reneging on an agreement to sell (or buy) makes you the scummest scum of the earth, worth less than flippers and curbstoners, but that's just me.

If you disclose, within the auction, that there might be damage you didn't know about, that came to light during the auction, why not let it run? Won't the BAT owners help you out with that?

My car has a replaced fender. I didn't care. It was done right at the sills with all spot welds drilled out. It's a cleaner than factory repair but it is not original.
