Help me with an offer price on this 76s

I like this 911. I am fan of the narrow body. The car is cosmetically challenged and I am having a difficult time deciding on an offer price. The cosmetic issues are original paint with 30 years of road rash, peeling clear coat, and dings/scratches. A tatty interior with torn and stained headliner, tired seats and carpet with a large tear in the passenger seat, tired doors with so-so pockets. However it has no dash cracks or visible rust.

The mechanicals of the car appear to be great. A fresh euro 3.0, easy shifting 915, good brakes and pretty tight suspension.

The car is clean but really showing it's age cosmetically.

Offer price?

Here is the sellers AD:
1976 911S with 3.0l Euro engine (204HP). Solid and original 89K mile Porsche with rebuilt engine (8K miles ago) Light, fast and reliable. 30 years worth of records from previous owners going back to window sticker. Rare aluminum trim option around fenders and below door. New clutch, tires, battery and windshield seal. Rebuilt fuel distributor, 964 cams, short shifter, SSI style exhaust (+20HP), CD changer, Konis, OEM F/R sway bars. Paint is a 7 out of 10. Was going to be a keeper but loss of job forces sale. Offered at $13.5K OBO.

How recently was the trans rebuilt? What was replaced?

What brakes are on the car.. stock 1976 S or slightly larger SC brakes?

That year motor is the 3.0L? I assume still CIS - how about pop-off valve? How are the head studs?

I beleive the chrome trim option was part of the touring package which came with 14" wheels.. are these 14 or 15's on the car?

Paint? well.. that can be a $300 earl shieb re-do or a do it right $6k (?) redo or more!

Interior? some easy to replace (like seats, carpets and door panels) with a little work and money. headliner too? yikes.

How old are the rubber suspension components? transmission and engine mounts?

My guess is the "loss of job" price of $13,5 coincides with the most recent pile of bills. This is essentially SC or even 3.2 Carrera money.

It really sounds to me like a $7500 car despite the upgraded motor.

Racer-

Thanks. You and I are in consensus on the offer price range. But I do not think the seller will go for it.

To answer your questions, according to the owner, the car is mechanically solid with his major contribution being the rebuilt euro 3.0 in it (with all appropriate updates like carrera tensioners, steel studs....). It runs and drives well and appears to have no outstanding mechanical issues.

I can't tell if that is a metallic paint. If it is not, then the clear coat is not a factory clear coat. Either way fixing the paint issue could run from wet sanding the clear and reshooting (about $500) to a new paint job ($4000k - $6000k). Interior will be another $1000k. It is a nice looking car, but like others have said, you could buy a pristine SC for the same price.

Very few SCs are going to have an engine like that.

I think the owner is on this board
same car right?

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?t=282729

Says in the post he has under 9k in it so I doubt he really expects to get 13k. Most likely just leaving room for negotiating. Probably a fun car with that engine in it.

It seems like a fun car, especially if you want to drive the crap out of it. If you're thinking about going to the track , you don't want nice paint anyway. If you're thinking about going to the track, interior schminterior.

However, I too agree that 13.5 is a little optimistic. Even though the motor is reasonably fresh, you don't know if the guy who built it is a fantastic mechanic or a beginner. You just never know.

If you want a more original car, for 10-15k you can get a nice SC and put the exhaust bits on it and have better brakes and have a zillion cars to pick from.

Offer 5k and settle for no more than 7500. I know you are a narrow fender guy, but hardy anyone else is, so why should you pay extra? The car is shot cosmetically and the paint is not the best color to start with either. It will take a lot of money to get it back to nice shape.

Just my two cents.

George

I made an offer that was not accepted

I offered $8k. No deal. I did not get a counter offer from the seller. I really like the car and I may reach out to him again using this thread as an example of why I made the offer I did. Sound good, or a potential turn off to a seller?

If he doesn't respond to 8k he can't be serious about selling. I doubt someone will get even close to his asking price. You can get SCs for 8-10k in similar shape and SCs are generally valued quite a bit higher than mid year cars. Whatever you do, don't fall in love with a particular car. There are a lot of cars out there and you'll find the right one if you are patient - without overpaying!

Good Luck,

George

I recognize the seller and I would trust the motor was rebuilt "properly". I still think it overpriced. That said, if you haven't noticed, MidYears have been rising in price, no doubt prodded by the unbelievable explosion in the price of Longhoods. Garden variety original 2.7s are now comfortably in the "asking" 9-12 range. This would be a great sleeper with a little elbo grease, some new seats, rs carpets and door panels.
