1971 911T value

I just inherited a 1971 911T from my brother. He was the original owner. I would love to restore it but don't have the time or money to do so. I am considering selling on Ebay but have no clue as to a value. Are there users here who can give me an idea of a reasonable price range?

Below are some of the details. I've attached a couple of photos. I can send more if they would be useful.

Year: 1971
Model: 911T
VIN: 9111100356
Engine: Rebuilt by Motor Meister in 2005
Mileage: 22,965 (probably 122,965)
Modifications: None - stock
Color: Silver
Body condition: No dents, but has rust/corrosion around door post, antenna, wheel areas, & windows.
Interior: Original equip., but in poor condition. Needs complete reupholstering.
Drivability: Turns over but I haven't been able to get it to start. It has been stored in a garage.
Accessories/Other: Removable roof rack, car cover, original manual, original tool kit, misc. old Porsche books.

You should do a search on Motor Meister, you will not be happy. This will be a big negative, new buyer will most likely be looking at a full rebuild. $10-15K depending on what you find MM did to it.

Next issue will be rust, you mentioned many of normal spots. A full bare metal repaint with all rust repair and you will looking at $20K.

Re-do the interior $5K.

Then there will be other minor items, so $35K + the cost of the car is where the buyer will be to have a driver.

A nice 71T driver will sell for $20-30K.

That's a bit harsh.

But there's some hard truth. The engine may be just fine. It needs to be judged on its specs, and to do that, it needs to be running. Getting it running will be a good investment.

The rust is something that can be expensive to fix. Unfortunately, metallic paints don't allow "patching" over bad areas, so it is a complete repaint the car will need.

The interior has the usual problems. The seats in it are not original, but are desirable. But the missing door pocket is pricey, and the cracked dash is a challenge (long story).

The car as it sits (assuming no other issues than mentioned) is probably worth about $6K. With a good running engine returning acceptable compression and leakdown numbers, +$2K

Your ideal buyer will be a hands-on type who likes to tinker.

Man, that was a quick reply.

Thanks. From browsing around, looking on ebaymotors, etc., I've figured out that I wouldn't be sending my kids to college on this inheritance. But, I would not like to give the car away or have it towed to a junkyard.

With $25-35K to fully restore, what do you think a reasonable auction reserve price would be?

A full restoration will cost $50K+, for the $35K you will have a nice safe driver.

As Techweenie said your best luck will be to find a buyer who wants a DIY project and will only be looking at the cost of hard parts. The big question will be what kind of parts MM used on the rebuild. Again do a search on MM and you will get a better understanding.

The biggest plus is that it looks like you have a complete car and it is still together so it is easy to see all the parts.

My brother kept every receipt for every repair/service. Looks like he gave MM about $12K including shipping the car from Eureka, CA to LA. In addition to the "usual" rebuild stuff, it looks like other major parts included new pistons, time sert case (whatever that is), crankshaft, alternator rebuild, clutch, brakes/rotors all the way around.

I'd love to at least get it started. As I said, it turns over fine. Plenty of gas in the tank. Is it difficult to check for fuel & spark on these things?

I only have a couple of days before I finish cleaning out the brother's house and have to get back to the east coast to my real job. The landlord is letting me keep under the cover in the driveway for a couple of months. Based on what I've heard from you guys, I'm thinking of setting a reserve of $1500 on EbayMotors (buyer to arrange for shipping.) Does that seem reasonable??

Don't confuse a low reserve with a low starting bid. If it were me, I'd put the reserve at $5,000 and the starting bid at $1.

Talking Sold

Thanks to everyone who responded with suggestions and advice.

I have already received a number of offers on the car and have agreed to sell it to a local buyer. Based on the helpful posts here I believe the price is a fair one. My brother had great plans for restoring his beloved 911. It appears that his passion for Porsche was not unique. He would be pleased that the car has found a good home with someone who will be bringing it back to life.
