914 value vs 944
I have owned both cars
a 1970 euro spec 914 [ with VW badges ] and a 1984 usa 944 but the resent values with the 914 look way too high to me with the cars original prices so far part but now reversed in value and the 914 so very prone to rust damage while few 944's have much rust unless driven in salt btw a resent post of a striped 914/6 offered bare tub at 5 k as an example how different is the bare tub 914/6 from the VW/4 car I thought the bolted on bits form all of the real differences and once striped the collector value is gone |

The reason for the value of a "6" tub is the VIN number. Only 3300 or so "6"s vs 118,000 "4"s.
Some thoughts: 914s are older for starters, and collectibility often starts with age. 914s are also "simpler" than 944s. Many 914s have rusted away. Finding a good, unmolested example is quite difficult. 914s are "open" cars and when you are buying a toys/collectibles, open cars are seen as more valuable/desirable for many than their coupe counterparts. Most folks buying "good" 914s came of age when 914s were new. To them a 914 holds a special place in their heart (emotional) that a newer car (a 944) doesn't. But, from a performance standpoint the 944 is the quicker car.

Well, there are some functional differences like the specific stub axles which let you use a real 911 hub vs. a drilled 914 one.

914's are air-cooled mid-engined german cars. Their value will continue to rise because of that and the previously mentioned reasons.

car or tub in question was bare bare bare no hub or axles or any other bolt on bits came with it and the car was hit and bent too [ straightened ] just a uni-body and sheet metal so is a VIN # really worth that much esp as there is no longer an original anything but the vin # and about the same starting point as a 914/4 tub now I understand an original 914/6 value and the high cost of doing a 914/4 to /6 up grade BUT I think a 944 turbo is a far better street car then the 914/6 a better high speed ride and far safer too for far less cash and the base 944 is a better car then a VW motored 914 now on an auto-X track the 914 wins |
