I'd say you could get $40-$45k,...higher end of that range (maybe more) in California, because 76 and newer cars require smog, making '75 and older a premium. I don't think black is as desirable as the bright '70s colors, but black is not a negative either.

1974 is the year to have with the old school heat exchangers. No thermal reactors, no smog.

Or the kiss of death:

9 o'clock please. I think the 3.oL have offset studs so the plate goes on only one way??/

But the black car in question has a 3.2 swap, so thermal reactors isn't relevant...

Of course it has a 3.2.

The point is, if you are buying a (mid-year) 74-77, the '74 IS the best choice. 75-77's were the worst of the bunch.
Price a '74 and '75 Carrera. '74 always wins hands down.

Thanks, everyone, for the kind words and thoughts on value. Much appreciated. Couple of comments:

•I never realized that perhaps the black Fuchs and the black side mirror weren't OEM and correct for '74. I'm guessing one of the POs decided to go with bigger wheels and a black flag mirror. Come to think of it, I think the Porsche steering wheel it came with is probably not from 1974. I've seen that wheel in SCs and Carreras (3 spoke).

• It has both door speakers and the central dash speaker.

•It's a Texas car. No rust rot.

I'd be inclined to keep it unless your "holy grail" car is out there somewhere.

As as owner of a '75, and a past owner of a '74 coupe, I find this thread hilarious - meaning that times have seriously changed.

People would have probably put this car at a value of $8K to $10K in 2011/early 2012. They would have bashed it - maybe would have given it some cred because of the motor. No one would have bought this car. No one was really interested in my '74 when I bought mine in 2012 either.

Well, I am happy things have changed for the better regarding these years. There are so very few left. That is the truth - very few '74s and '75s have gotten this far in this condition.

I wonder about that myself. I tend to watch the "for sale" and "what's it worth" threads on a regular basis, and I can count on one hand the number of times I've seen a Porsche similar to mine ('74, Coupe, mostly original, relatively few miles, rust-free).

I owned a 77 w/ a 3.2 a few years ago - sold for $18k if I remember correctly. Wish I still had it, for the life of me I can't remember what made me want to sell it, great car.

In 2007, we took a rust free stripped to bare metal Signature edition, with freshly built never run Eisenbud's 2.7 RS spec engine on Webers; and we parted it out. We got $6k for the engine and $3k for the chassis. We sold it to Renegade Hybrids, who cut it in half, and put the halves on rotisserie spinners in their booth at SEMA that year. We had been trying to sell the car complete as an unfinished project ready for paint for $8k and in about a year we couldn't place it. I would kill for that car right now...

Ouch!

On a side note, my other mechanic is convinced that my Weber set-up alone is worth $6-8K. Not sure I quite believe him.

It says Italian webers but it doesn't say what size. If they are big ones 46mm, he's right. If they are just 40's $2-3k unless they are IDS. IDS, again might we worth $5-6.

I suppose my ignorance is showing again. Are there markings I can look for?

Oh no, not mine. I GIS'd that picture. Those are 46s. My targa is getting the 83 SC lump I've got out in the barn. Probably stay CIS.

Now the 74 Coupe is another story. It's getting a 2.5SS (see thread in engine building) on 901 Shop prepped 40IDAs.
