Yes, HPV-1 & 46mm Webers (left overs from a 2.8). The motor starts pulling strong around 4,000, and peaks around 7200. I wanted a conservative track motor. It runs great on the street at any rpm, no fuss.

Jeff,

Looks good! Hopefully I will be at this point by this coming weekend. The big question. Did you use red locktite or the ARP lube on the rod bolts? I'm assuming the ARP lube by the pictures. Can't wait to get started!

I used the ARP lube, which appears to be moly based? I can't see a need for the loctite, but that is a whole nother discussion I don't want to get involved in!

Have fun putting it back together!!

Cheers

man am i envious!!!! I am STILL waiting for parts to show up and the rest of the stuff is at the machinists getting love. I cant wait to get going on it after talking about it forever. I am hoping to make as much or more than all you guys with 3.4's. The machinist I chose is doing some things to the heads I havent really heard of before but he says they pay off. He does R&D for subaru so who knows what we will see on the dyno. I just want to get it all back and start putting stuff together. All this downtime is killing me. I have been filling my days with school and sanding the M&K muffler, doing up the wiring harness, figuring out the fuel system, fiddling with the suspension, polishing the oil breather tank and other silly detail stuff. Then I daydream about what my 72 might morph into and my dad keeps telling me sell it, take mine and then he can get a used gt3, greedy man.

Jeff, I was kinda hoping you were going to end up with efi for it all but I think you made a very sound decision. Carbs with crankfired ignition is great, what setup are you going with? I have heard some scary stuff about the latest and greatest (or not) electromotive bits. Seems the old stuff is bombproof though.

Anyone want to give up their 3.2 manifolds for my monster motor I have in mind lol? I am willing to beg, borrow and barter haha.

FWIW does anyone have power comparisons between short stroke 3.3 litre engines and 3.4 litre engines? It will be interesting to see how the two compare in terms of hp and tq.

Best of luck with the build and may the gods of power shine upon you!

cheers, ryder

I still haven't decided on the induction yet. The specs were posted in FEB before I started second guessing my wisdom....

Jeff,

I had already made the same decision on no loctite on the rod bolts and am going to use a stretch guage as well. My machinist does only exotic and race motors and he does not use it on his motors. Keep us posted on progress.

I bought some extras in that odd size for just that reason.
My buddy lost one when it went to the machinist. I figured it was only a matter of time until that happened to me so I got one for him and some extras for myself.
Of course, I probably can't find them now..

LOL, I have containers of all the common fasteners on these things from nylocs to the piched locking nuts to aluminum and stell washers to you name it. Think I have on of those fine pitch nuts, you know, the only one on the motor that is like it, yeah right, not likely!!! I will get one tomorrow, actually make that a dozen! Kinda pissed me off as I had time set aside tonight to get it sealed.

Oh well, Maybe I will drive it again next year. Still got to finish the chassis welding, put the interior back in, build the motor, re- shim the diff, get the car painted blah blah blah, yep, I am stressed about it. Sometimes all it takes is one little thing like a missing nut to make me want to light the thing on fire!

Hmmmm, wonder what my next project should be, 914-6, 550 spyder with a "6".......

Rant over!

Cheers

Looks good Jeff!

I always get a kick out of those block shots...my brain keeps switching from having the bearings sticking out to sticking in if you know what I mean.

How did the stretch gauge work out at the end for you?

Cheers,

MIke

got the top end on yet? Let me tell you, wiring an efi setup gets confusing at times! I just want my parts back and build the motor although the time has been spent making brackets routing wires, putting in the slick new heat shield bla bla bla.

Your decision to go with carbs is saving you TONS of time and anxiety. Cant wait to see it done

Top end? Nope. not even close. I have way too much on my plate right now. Heads are still off with my machinest, I told him I was not in a rush and he took me for my word!!! Ooops.

I hope to seal the case this weekend. Hope being the key word here!!

I have actually decided to go EFI!! Hope you guys are proud of me!
I am just finishing up the pricing on the Jenveys hopefully this week. I have decided to use a Microteck ECU. I will use Bosch coils with this set up as well. The local Autronic expert here sent me to see the local Microtech expert (both great guys) and I decided on the microtech. He will do the initial start up and initial tune and then once the motor is broken in, do the final set up on the dyno. I am paying a flat fee for this. This will be there first Porsche tunning but he is highly recommended around here and is looking forward to it. They build many crazy high performance turbo and NA Japanese cars using the microtech set up. He has done 50+ installs so he knows his stuff!

I am also going with the digital dash option available as well! Figured "why not"??

So, that is where it sits as of right now. More pics and updates to follow!!

PS, Chris, if you need any of those 10x1.0 nuts let me know, I have a couple dozen!!!

Cheers

Stretch gauge

Hi catca,

When you used the stretch gauge on your rod bolts I assume you have to tighten one bolt at a time to full torque, rather than 'snugging' them both down equally, like on a cylinder head ?

Hey Jeff,

I am proud of you. Post a link to the EFI system if you can.

Okay, finally got the case assembled today!! Yahoooooooooo!! Actually did it twice, long story, but made a mistake I have never made before the first time (I guess that is one less mistake I have to make in my life )

So here it is.......

almost time to start the "part 2" thread, or maybe just keep it all in one...

Cheers

Com'on Jeff, it took me 14 posts to cover my rebuild... ;-)

Nice job so far...really clean. What was the final resolution of the problem with the broken stud in the case and the screw up machining?

Cheers,

Mike
