Oil Tank & Forward Oil Thermo
 

The thermo plugs are in there 4ever at this point. Heat didn't help, so I tested it and it opens when hot, so I'll use it as is till it dies and replace it then. Also, have the oil tank ready for tape and paint:p

Ugh, sorry to see all that nice clean motor work has to be interrupted by dealing with the nasty oil mess of the tank and surrounding area. Looks like the worst is almost behind you though.

For some reason I didn't get a recent notification that the thread had been updated so I stopped it to be sure I didn't miss anything and I'm glad I did.

Its interesting to know that the cam chain alignment was that far off from the factory.

I'm glad to report that the reason for my 930 sacrafice is already paying dividends. I've been testing my abilities on the mill by making a few test pieces that also have some artistic value once I'm done whittling them out of the billet and checking their specs, lol.

The nested one is called a turner's cube. Creating one used to be a method for machinist apprentices to prove their abilities to their masters. They were only shown one and then had to make one of their own. I saw one decades ago and realized creating my own would be a great and productive way to test my abilities as well as those of my machine.

They look even cooler in person, like an Escher drawing come to life. I also set the cutting speeds and feeds to just the right amount set up a neat filigree effect on all the flat surfaces.

The other design is just a deriviative of the turner cube idea that I came up with that I call 'square peg in the round hole'. Its just the right size to hold a votive candle in the hole and is a birthday gift for a good friend.

Welcome back Tony, you haven't missed much...going slow and trying to learn a lot as I go along so I can do it right;)

The cam chain alignment was not that bad, but if somebody went and threw on 3 shims on one side and 4 on the other as a factory setting w/o checking it they would have some serious issues down the road. I don't think they should recommend starting with any shims that way you'd have to do all the measurements every time and that would cause you to always use the proper number of shims to get the alignment right.

I'd say the difference here is likely due to the Super Cup cams being a little different then OEM 930 cams...

Next subject; on to the oil lines: Rather then clean and taking the dents outta the factory hard oil lines that run up to the forward oil cooler I'm considering ordering a set of the Elephant Racing lines. They are finned for added cooling and have a purge valve to clean out old oil during changes. Anybody else using them? How's fitment?

New lines sound like a good idea. If they are finned, combined with the old factory cooler up front should be all you need to get by with since the lines will do a lot of the heat exchange for you.

I know the technique I would use to make it but getting the depths of the holes right might take some thought or just measurements.

Do you have a thread about the mill?

You are correct that the hole size and depth is the secret. I made 'square peg in the round hole' as my first test piece, examined it to decide how the geometry should work for a turners cube, and then used my good ol' trigonometric and engineering skills, as well as an excel spreasheet, to come up with all the numbers I needed for the CAD/CAM side of things. Very glad I got it right the first time since its been a while since I've done any real machining work.

I'd be interested to know some things like cost, where you got it, and whether it can take Solidworks models when saved in the proper file format.

My setup which inculdes their larger 1100 mill, duality lathe, 4th axis kit, tooling package and deluxe stand set me back about $16,500.

That price includes both the Mach3 controller software for the controller PC and also includes a nicely discounted CAM software called SprutCAM that can convert Solidworks files into CNC files. The following page contains a lot of good demo videos for SprutCAM, including video #1 on how to import CAD files into the program.

Not to worry you have a hair dryer to keep it quiet up to about 2000 RPM

The RarelyL8 muffler is not overly loud at idle or putting around (though I would not call it quiet) but really roars at high RPM on boost - I think you will love it !!!

checked valve to piston clears tonight & bolted 964 Flywheel & sensor on...int valve min clears 1.5mm and 2.0mm for exh all good;)
