head studs/ head wok

Just figured out I have a broken head stud. did some quick research. what do you guys recommend?? Also there was a thread on here about a guy I think in michagan tht did really good head rebuilds and was reasonable with good turn around? cant find the thread now. Gunna do exhaust (probably rarely late) and itb I bought from al a whil back. have a completely "new" 915 with lsd and wevo parts ready to rock. Motor ran really strong, just saw a washer in fins. pulled cover and there it was. would keep up with 996 and 997s on spirted drives. hoping that means its solid aide from this.. slippy slope........

cgarr = Craig Garrett (or is it just one T?)and he's in Grand Rapids, Michigan. That plus Google ought to get you the info you need to contact him. If nothing else, search posts here to find one he responded to, and use the private message system to contact him.

Craig did my heads and refaced my rockers as well. High quality work at a reasonable price. Go with confidence!

Any point in opening case?. Motor runs great and has food oil pressure. Or is it more a " case" by " case" issue?

Hard to answer without mileage, what do you think the mileage is?

The reason I ask is it depends on wear of the bearings ergo main, rod and IMS.

If tracked even more critical

not to take work away from Cgarr as I have seen his work and its excellent but if your bay area Ted Robinson at German Precision and Jay across the parking lot do great work at a very reasonable price.

Capt.: From the clues in your posts, this car could be anything from a 1965 through a 1986 911. Starting in 1980 there was basically only one model (no S, E, or T) engine. When asking for advise it is always useful to include basic information like this.

is it a snapped stud? if so then if its snapped deep, and more snap as you take the top end apart, than you are MAY need to split the case to get them out (if welding to the old stud, dosent yield any results and they need to be bench drilled, etc).

To "asses" IMS without looking at it, A good clue will be how your cam sprockets look for wear, as the IMS sprockets will be showing similar wear...

Maybe do a leak down test before starting the tear down, just to help you assess the top end.

Top end is about 70% of the work, so maybe go the whole hog

It's 'cause the engines in the back; consider it a feature.
