Right on, RD. Boy, did I like sitting on that standard S. It fit really well.
Sometimes my pocket wishes I'd get excited about UJMs instead but I know better... or at least I think I do...

BTW, don't sell the Rep short as a do-it-all bike. I have one, commute with it, tour with it and some soft bags, and on weekends rip it up. Thats what I wanted when I started looking for a bike and I found one that does do-it-all. Sorry if you are inseam challenged.

How about "Arbeit Macht Fscked!" if its gonna be outright anti-sem, which I've seen a little of in this thread, disturbingly.
Or better yet maybe there won't be any more inflammatory content... riiiiight. Note: I appear to be contributing as of this post. Great! I'm infected now. Thanks a lot! But I thought that even way OT, that there were some interesting historical points brought up, and I did learn a few things. I do often wonder what the modern world would be like if Germany had won WWI (that's World War ONE guys)... very very different. Possibly better. So, yeah. R1100S. Love it. Want it. yep yep. Enchiladas.

The Replika, I think, would make a fine "do it all" bike but for the ride height. In the end I'd likely change it so far back to regular "S" config (the rear shock would HAVE to go) that it wouldn't make a lot of sense for me. And yeah, I'm inseam challenged enough that I can't flat-foot the 2005 Replika. I'd be the dork with a Replika with hard luggage too.

Actually, there are a lot of dorks, as you would call them, with the hard luggage. Repoe here, comes to mind. They did jack the '05 up a little more than the '03-'04's but I sat on one and didn't really see it as a problem. It flat-footing that important to you? You only really need the ball of both your feet down. Heels are overrated when it comes to strength and stability.

Being a bit tall the Replika's height doesn't bother me. The graphics do
but that's fixable enough.Seems to me that an adjustable-length torque arm for any "S" (Replika or otherwise) would let you set the rear ride height to exactly your needs. Bit pricey, about $300 I think? But damned useful... |

Huh, adjustable torque arm. (thinks about R65) Yep, news to me!
I say "dork" only 'cause it seems like a slightly dorky thing to do, but as I'm basically a dork it doesn't bother me, it makes sense in fact. The rep at Capitol winced visibly when I asked if you could put hard bags on a Replika, leading me to believe by application of peer pressure that it is in fact a dorky idea, one that I'm certainly not above. I wasn't wearing my Sidis at the time, just my thin-soled Adidas Sambas (leftover from my recently injury-aborted soccer playing days) so that might make a difference, and the Replika had its rear suspension jacked down pretty far in the preload to compensate for short-inseamed peeps coming in to sit on the thing. All in all a wash I guess. As it was I got enough foot down that I could control it, not flatfooted though. Maybe I'm hung up on flatfooting it. I also wonder whether or not its a good idea to sidestand a Boxer anyway, do you Replika folks get start-up smoke from that? Or do you meticulously paddock-stand your bikes?

Its not something I would worry about. I've never had start-up, and I only use the paddock stand when I need to. I never even thought that would be an issue. When I went to buy mine, I told the sales dick that I was looking for a prep. They said they could only get me the ugly yellow one and I said no way. Then he offered me the replika and said he would split the difference on the price. 14k out the door. Plus BMW made some of my payments for me. I thought it was nice of them. Regrets, none. Does the bike do what I want, yes. Do I care if I have a regular S or the Rep, not really. The first thing I did was take the signature off because everyone asked who Randy was. Now they just dool.

Thats not a "standard" S. Heated grips, ABS, probably a couple other knick knacks the newbee didn't realize. Seems those type prices are creeping back up. Anyway why would a replica be more expensive? Other than stickers there isn't that much there - as there shouldn't be. If you like the rep get it. With some Rapiddog barbacks and a different seat it would be just fine. It does have good poser value. Make your own decision, everyone here will justify their bike purchase! This is a crazy thread. It reminds me of college where a bunch of kids sat passing the bong around all stoned, espousing "knowledge" that makes no sense to the outsider that knocks on the door and walks in.

belly pan shmelly pan
this fellow is looking for a useful ride it looks to me.... the Rep is a boss ride, but if he wants any form of practicality, the standard is plenty tall as it is...as was said, the Rep is taller for 3 reasons, longer tok arm, tall shock, taller seat (i.e."comfort seat)...the standard dooshes those three rightoff the bat, saving bookoo cash out the door...but don't pay MORE for the standard tha the Rep, that's just bull. BTW, if it where me I'd save the cashola and get a non-ABS unit if possible...just IMO.

oh, and spend your mad money on geated grips and an accessory plug, 2 must-haves...
After that it's shocks (the Swedish Yellow ones) and an exhaust system...thems what you're gonna need so you can save up for 'em...

Rapiddog aren't those the same shocks that were coming on the "sport" versions before? And shorter torque arm?

Well, thats why I was questioning it. I thougth the standard was going for 11k. They added 3.6k of goodies to this one? Are they charging labor for adding the goodies too to make it 14.6k, or what? Doesn't jive to me.
Oh, and Rapid. If the BCR is that same as the Standard with minor changes, why is it not a useful ride? This is one thing I don't get about you old folk. Just because its squidly looking doesn't make it any different than what you are riding on. Especially if you go and change the exhaust and suspenders. To me, that seems like more of a squidly move. I guess we all differ in opinions. |

What you mean "old guys?" Old in age or old on the board? Or old in crankiness!
Problem is, the BMW web site would be much more useful if you could build a bike to your specs and then see what the price should be - with each add on. Like you can do with cars. I'm sure the ABS and heated grips are $3,000 alone.

(sigh) wisdom comes with age I guess
......let me clarifty "junior"...if the new guy is looking for a bit more comfort and he can't touch the ground AND he's looking to put alot of miles on the bike aka sport-"touring", (and he's wanting to pu bags on a BCR, risking the "dork factor") he might be better off spending his hard earned cash on a platform he can add to as he sees fit...the BCR may not be for everybody is my point...unless you just GOTTA have one....
